Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

wow, that's wild. I don't think I've used a straw since surgery. I have such bad gas all the time I'd probably blow up!

It was so weird at our party last night . . . there were all these platters of wonderful hors' doeuvres and I was absolutely fine just tasting a little of this and a little of that. Gotta' love the band.

Yeah! I'm sure my daughter will be appreciative of my new "NO STRAW" road trips!

edit: I meant DAUGHTER! My daughter has to ride in the car with "Miss Bloated" Mom!

Yes, I'm such a dainty thing. Burp, fart, groan.

I hope no one thinks I am judging them for their choices. I am guilty of making my bad choices on a regular basis -- IF not, I'd be a lot closer to my goal than I am! I'm not perfect, I'm a recovering food addict. I'll always struggle with my food choices. That's just going to be my lot in life!

I think an occasional beer, soda or champagne isn't going to hurt anything. We have to live out lives and enjoy ourselves. Some docs say tell their patients to never eat carbs again - including any sweets. IF I could do that, I wouldn't have needed the band in the first place. I don't want to diet the rest of my life. Sure, I want to eat better and smaller portions, but if I want a bite of a cookie or something special once in a while. I should be able to!

I agree. I think if we get feeling toooo deprived, then we go off the deep end. Just having a taste of stuff is enough to keep me going sometimes. Or to realize that it doesn't really taste that good anyway!

I totally agree with you! AND I hate to admit it, but I do buy things I know I shouldn't, eat one bite and then throw the rest in the sink and drown it with water! I've done that with ice cream. All I wanted was a bite! And that bite was so good and went down so easily, that I knew I had to get rid of it fast! But I didn't miss it, that bite was just as satiating as the entire pint and I had no "eaters regret" later!

Yeah, ice cream is really a tough one for me. I LOVE ice cream. I buy those "Blue Bunny" ice cream bars. They have 90 calories or something and very few carbs, so they work out pretty well. I just can't imagine life without ice cream. It would suck.

you all make it so hard to catch up with all these post :-p, I did it though!

I'm far from perfect with the band, sometimes that scares me..I know I need another fill, but I can't get back to denver until beginning of jan. I'm finally starting to be back on track with exercising, though its a little too early to tell because its only been this last week!

I have to work graveyard tonight, and every night this week until 9am saturday morning! Which makes it hard to not make bad/poor food choices because sometimes its boring!

I'm going to start bring my wii to work and playing this outdoor activity challenge.. I absoulety love the game, and end up sweating more playing it than I do at the gym..

It's going to be fun meeting everyone next month, I am excited.. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions too, so be ready!

What's this weight loss challenge/reporting everyone does? can I join?

I guess I figured one beer wouldn't hurt. But as it was, I only got in 1/3 of it before I had to send it away. Can drinking that little bit of carbonated beverage actually stretch my pouch???? :)

Dr. K put the fear of Jesus into me when I asked about having diet Coke. He said absolutely not, no carbonation at all, ever.

Yeah! Fear is a great motivator! It always has been in my life!

I'm still fearful of taking my meds in whole form.

I look forward to meeting you too!

About the weight loss challenge. For awhile, I think since the Reunion Picnic, we have challenged ourselves to lose a specific amount of weight for a specific amount of time. This challenge will end the last day of the year. We weigh every Thursday and report here if we lost, gained, or remained the same. It kind of gives us some motivation!

I'm supposed to weigh today. I asked for special dispensation from Minidriver (she's the challenge's moderator) to be able to weigh on Sunday instead of Thursday due to my dependent edema issues!

You're welcome to join us!

I know how you're feeling about work! I started a new job 2 weeks ago, besides the fact that I absolutely hate my new job and that stresses me out, (it was totally mispresented to me in the interview), I also am working every day, which is new. I've not been working out, no time to swim my laps and I hate getting out of the habit! I am so angry at myself for accepting this stupid stupid job! And anger is one emotion which makes me want to eat! I don't do anger well! I was taught as a child that "nice girls don't get angry!"

Oh, no. I'm so sorry to hear that you hate your new job. Are you going to stick with it? It's not worth it if you are unhappy every day . . . .:tongue2:

Thanks Mini!

I feel I have reason to leave, however, I am 500 hours from vesture with this healthcare system! I've worked for them since 2002. Since it's an internal transfer, I run the risk of having to stay in this job for 6 months and then hope to find another within the system. The position was misrepresented to me from the start. They require 24-7 call, which was never conveyed to me. I would have never accepted a job that required being on call everyday for 24 hours! That's just a small part of it! I'm so angry at myself for leaving the NICU! Angry Angry Angry!!!

BTW, I lost 4.4lbs. My ankles are still swollen, so I am thinking I lost more than that, but I'll take the 4.4lbs!

Thanks for your support!

Dee, I'm so sorry to hear about your new job not going as you planned. That's just terrible to hear! Maybe it will get better once you're past the whole "training" period? I certainly hope so.

Also, I don't think you are judging me for my bad choices. I posted here about the beer because I just had to share how much my tastes had changed. And like Mini, I've tried to do online research about carbonation with the band and come up short, so I was honestly curious about the effects. The beer didn't taste good, so I'm fairly certain it will be awhile before I try one again. New Year's champagne will probably be my next test with carbonation!

I'm fortunate to never have liked beer or champagne. I remember at my wedding reception pouring my dom into my hubby's glass because I couldn't stand the taste! I do, however, miss my diet pepsi! My daughter will drink one and I can smell it! I used to love a cold diet pepsi in the afternoon!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
