Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

The flight (in First Class!) was great. However, it seems I'm having a reaction to the Hydrocodone that not many others have. At least, if they've had this reaction, they didn't post about it, and I didn't know to expect it.

I've had terrible, terrible, almost explosive gas and liquid runs. :) I know, it's disgusting, but it's the truth. Since it started on Day 2, it has not stopped. With every dose of pain meds, I get this horrible gassy rumbling in my tummy and I'm in the bathroom almost every 15 mins. It only stops when I sleep! This made the flights back (and all that time in the airport) a little hard to tolerate. I guess I'm just special, haha. But luckily, I haven't had the shoulder/chest/back gas pains. Just the ones south of the border.

Oh no!! That's too bad. Are you able to get enough pain relief just with the liquid tylenol?

Well, I took the pain meds about 3:30a this morning, and I was able to hold off on more meds until about 1:30p this afternoon, so that tells me the pain is slowly subsiding. I am going to take the liquid tylenol tonight before bed if I need it, and I'll see if that does the trick and helps me sleep. If so, then Bye Bye Poopy Meds!!!:)

So I know that a few of you Colorado ladies offered to pick me up from the airport and take me to my fill appt on Thursday, but I'm not 100% sure exactly who it was. I will totally pay $20 in gas money, so that I am not just taking advantage. I am getting in at 1:30 and my fill is at 2:30 and then I have to be back at the airport at 4 to catch my flight at 5. I know, kinda cutting it close. If you can't pick me up anymore please let me know by tuesday so that I can book a supershuttle. Thanks!

Okay, I a little slow on the uptake: so, we are starting the challenge this Thursday (the 13th) so the first weigh in is on the 20th? Or is our first weigh in the 13th? It is all so confusing:blink: To whom do we mail our goal and weekly info?

Okay, you nurse and nurse-types on here, recent research has been quoted as being able to consume TOO much Water. What kind of quantity is that? I try to get in 3-4 quarts a day. Is that considered too much?

Jamie I feel your pain, I had the same issues, but Doc told me it was probably from the antibiotic. He said he sometimes prescribes a little much, and that it knocks out some of the good along with the bad. It took me a couple of weeks to get over it. It was strange cuz it usually happened everytime I would have a Protein Drink, and then I was in the bathroom within 10 minutes. So I finally figured out not to drink the shake. (DUH):)

Hmmm, I wonder if taking Probiotics would help you guys? Ya' know, restore the healthy stuff to your gut.

You know it's weird, but I think you're right. I think it is the antibiotics doing it to my tummy and not the hydrocodone pain meds. Because I went about 9hrs without pain meds this morning, yet still had the upset tummy and loose stools. Through it all though, I've continued taking that pink bubble gum flavored antibiotic - so that might be the culprit.

Geesh, I'll be happy when this is all over!

Weigh yourself on the 13th so that you can keep track, but you don't need to send that to anyone. Then just post how many pounds you hope to lose. First official weigh in will be the 20th.

I don't know about the water thing. I'm horrible with getting in enough water.

Hi Deb,

I would say that your maximum water intake, under normal conditions, should be 12 8-oz glasses per day. Of course if you were hiking the grand canyon, etc., then more would be warranted.

Sorry I'm so late getting this picture posted, but I got busy! Jaime, we didn't do the pic while you were there, since I know I would have killed anyone wanting to take my picture after my surgery!

In the picture:

Brandy, Dee, Nora's friend, Denise, Nora and Deb aka Tally

Dee, thanks for posting the picture. It was so nice meeting all of you. It certainly was an interesting trip for me.

Did you get everything situated with your fill???

Thanks for coming out to Panera. I know you were in pain. I hope you are feeling better now. I'm not sure if my fill situation is figured out or not. I called Dr. K Sat. morning and met him at his office where they were moving so it was under "battle ground conditions" as he said, lol. Luckily he had a kit in his car. When I left his office on Friday he said I had a little over 7.1 cc in my band but he thought I had a leak. On Sat. am when I couldn't even get a baby sip of Water in, he pulled out only 6 cc. Then he said "I hate to tell you this but I am quite certain I just punctured your tubing". So I left Friday thinking I had a leak and set a surgery date for Dec. went in Sat. overfilled and feeling relieved that I did not have a leak. Then he says he punctured my tubing and kept the Dec. surgery date. I left Sat. with 5.5 cc. I am currently feeling restriction so I really have no clue. Poor Dr. K says he has no clue either and has never experienced anything like this before. I am having a bit of pain on the right side of my stomach at times so I am hoping my band hasn't slipped or isn't unlatched a she thought originally. Whether or not I have any band or port problems though I believe he miscalculated but not sure by how much. I don't understand why else I would have such different amounts in my band every time he withdraws it. I'm not sure if I have true restriction or swelling. If you can have swelling with a fill then imagine what it is like after 3 fills in three days with several unfills at the same time. I will just have to wait and see what the coming days bring.

Oh, man, Tally. How confusing. I hope you don't have a leak, but I'm glad you had enough taken out so you're not vomiting any more. Crud. Isn't there any way to know whether or not you have a leak? Can they tell with fluoroscopy or something?

Yeah, it's been pretty confusing for sure. Dr. K was so certain the first time because he said within 24 hours there was 2 cc less in there and he was going to leave my band empty but I said no put back in what I had yesterday thinking even a few hours of restriction would be better than none so why not? At that point he said Fluoro wouldn't help much because there had to be a leak. That's when I found that I was overfilled so I am glad I had him fill it back up. But of course now that he is pretty certain that he punctured it I don't know what to think. I have been thinking a lot about all of this and I think I would like some kind of test whether fluro or ultrasound or whatever. If nothing else, just to know that the band is in place and rule that out. Would a regular ultrasound be able to show that? Because maybe I can just have my PCP here order that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
