It's not gas... gas is an entirely DIFFERENT pain. My doctor said yes, spasms are quite normal for the first week or so. I would actually get them more frequently when I waked and especially when I'd drink something cold.. Of course I had to walk anyway, but the spasms would stop me dead in my tracks the first few days but they grew less intense and less frequent as time went by.

Good luck!

I get them too. My dr. said that is normal. Usually what helps me is breathing just like I would do when I was in labor.

Thank you all for the posts. I'm glad I wasnt the only one experiencing this. I was starting to worry. The pain reminded me of a contraction during child birth, Thanks again for the support.

I got them too for about 11 days. The first day after surgery, I got them just laying there doing nothing. Then I had them only when I drank liquid, then they tapered off until eventually, I did not get them anymore.

Probably just a normal reaction to the trauma your body went through but make your doctor aware. If they persist, or increase in intensity or duration, be sure to be persistent yourself and get it checked out as they could be warning signs of an obstruction (unlikely if you're still on liquids). Better to feel foolish, than wind up in the hospital. I had those same symptoms starting in week three and wound up in the hospital during week 9 because my intestines had twisted. However, I know many people from my support group who had the same symptoms but NO complications. So odds are in your favor. I am sharing this because I too came here looking for help back then. Don't be scared, just be aware! You are your doctor's best resource so don't be afraid to speak up! Best of luck to you!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
