Post-op diet progressions

Recommended Posts

I've seen SO MANY different post-op diet progressions I was hoping people would post them here so I could see what the general commonalities are.

I'll go first: I'm on full liquids including Soups and sugar free puddings for 2 weeks after surgery, then soft foods (scrambled eggs, refried Beans, tuna/chicken/egg salad) for 2 weeks, then the normal dense Protein followed by veggies if tolerated starting at 4 weeks post op.

One big difference that stands out to me is I am not allowed to have Protein shakes after 2 weeks post op.

You would have to get your Protein in with your food. Like chicken Breast, eggs, Greek Yogurt, Beans, Etc.

My progression post op is as follows

First 2 days Clear Liquids

next 2 weeks full liquids which consists of yogurt, pureed fruit and protien shakes

Next 2 weeks- pureed foods consisting of protien (animal and fish) and vegetables and fruits. 2 ounces of protien and 1 ounce of fruit/vegetable 3 times a day.

Them soft mushy foods with the same ratio of 2/1 protien to vegetable/fruit.

I do not have to stop protien shakes but I do have to meet my protien and Fluid requirement each day. So I add up my protien throughout the day and it will determine if I need to supplement with a shake.< /p>

I hope this makes sense.

Mine is exactly the same as yours, except for the fruit. I can't have fruit until I'm on stage 4. My Protein req are: stage 1 = 50+, stage 2 & beyond: 75+

Mine is as follows:

Week 2: full liquids (protein shakes, strained creamy Soups, drinkable yogurt)

Weeks 3-6: soft/puréed foods (yogurt, cottage cheese, puréed meats)

Week 7 on: introduce all foods

First week.. clears.. not even Protein shakes

2nd week, milks and Protein Shakes

3rd week, purees but not pureed meats plus soft cooked eggs and cottage cheese

4th week soft foods.. includes fish, deli shaved meats, Beans, soft cooked vegetables, soft fruits (no berries) toast, cheese)

5th week .. Ground meats, ham, salad greens cold cereals

6th week.. poultry, nuts, fruits except citrus, raw veggies, breads, rice and Pasta

7th week... Citrus fruits, seeds, berries, Protein Bars, all other meats

I was instructed to try to get as much Protein from foods as possible but it's ok to supplement with protein shakes as needed especially at the beginning. Was also advised not to puree foods once I'm in the soft foods phase since my stomach needs to mature properly and not get "lazy"

I'm on all liquids until my 3 week follow up - includes Water, tea, sugar free drinks (crystal lite, etc), sugar free Jello, broth, fat free or 1% milk, Protein Shakes, etc. After that, purée for a week, small chopped for a week, then "regular" diet. I feel like I'm on liquids way longer than most folks here...

Your pre op and post op sounds a lot like mine!! I had to do 2week clear liquid diet with Protein Shakes pre op and I am only 5 days out from surgery and on just Clear Liquids. I go back to see my dr on Thursday and I think he will add protein shakes at that time.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
