Will sleep apnea ever go away?

Recommended Posts

I now weigh 189. I have lost almost 60 pounds. I still use my CPAP machine every night, but we went out of town for one night this week and I left my machine at home. My husband said I still snored just as bad as I used to. I was disappointed to hear this. I was hoping it would have at least improved by now. Do some people never get off the CPAP machine no matter how much weight they lose?

some people have sleep apnea without being overweight. I have a brother-in-law who is thin with severe sleep apnea.

Yup, I agree. I had sleep apnea when I was a kid and I was not overweight. I'm down a hundred plus pounds. I don't snore, but I'm convinced that I'm still suffering from sleep apnea. I still wake up with the headaches and sometimes feel exhausted.

I still snore, but I think maybe the apnea is gone. I no longer wake up tired or with headaches. I don't use a CPAC although I was supposed to get one before the surgery and I didn't, and now I've lost 55 lbs, when I get down a little further, maybe 160 or so if I'm still snoring, or if I find that I'm in a stall for too much longer, I'll see if I can get another sleep study to see if I still have the apnea.

I know not enough sleep can affect weight loss and if I need to get the CPAP I will.

I believe a loss of 10% excess weight is enough to get off the cpap. Everyone is different though. I stopped using mine a few days after surgery and have not used it since. No longer snore according to my wife, no more headaches in the morning to grogginess the next day. In fact, I am "donating" my cpap machine to my wife as she just got diagnosed with severe sleep apnea (60% o2 levels at night). She will be having VSG in a few months.

My surgeon told me that some people are able to get off the cpap with weight loss, and others are not. I apparently have pretty severe sleep apnea - 69 - so he says that I may never get off of the cpap - it may just be genetic. But he said the weight loss will definitely help - I may be able to go down to a lower pressure level on my cpap with weight loss.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
