Undetected pregnancy during gastric sleeve surgery.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I am asking this for a friend of mine who recently had her gastric sleeve surgery. She was expecting her routinely cycle during the surgery, however 3 weeks postop she found out she is preggers!

It seems like she was pregnant while in surgery. She is freaking out and by all means it is very scary..she is going to see her obgyn on monday, but I just thought I should post here and see if anyone was ever in a similar boat?

I know someone concieved 2 weeks post op,, but I would, like to know if someone was concieved pre op and didnt knew until after surgery.

What are the effects of anesthesia and the surgery itself and the pain meds?? By the way she is only 2 weeks when she had her sleeve surgery.

Thanks for your answers in advanced everyone. I myslef got approved today for my sleeve and waiting for surgery date :)

My stats

5'2, wt 220, bmi 40, no co-morbidity.

Well I haven't experienced it but I know it's a huge risk. The surgery it's self isn't to harmful but the pain meds and tests might very well be. Please keep us updated! Vary interested in what the obgyn has to say. It doesn't happen often

Even though there was NO chance I could be pregnant, because I still ovulate, I was required to do a urine pregnancy test day of surgery.

Seems strange they didn't do a pregnancy test. I have my doubts there, maybe her dates are off?

I don't know if this will help her but when I was 3 weeks pregnant I had a upper g.i. Then at 7 weeks they removed my band. Docs weren't concerned at all. I went on to have a healthy and very safe pregnancy. He is now almost 8 months old.

My daughter had to have surgery both times she was pregnant. First one for appendicitis and second one for a dermoid cyst on her ovary. The only concern the docs had was it may induce miscarriage. She also had kidney stones for most of her second pregnancy so was on pain meds. The docs were ok with it but boy was I glad when that baby was born! Anyway hope your friend does ok.

Hi Alisha

I would just like to congratulate your friend. I was three weeks pregnant when I had my sleeve on the 28th January 2013. I didn't know I was pregnant the hospital have said they did a pregnancy test but it showed negative. I went to my gp as I was not able to take the pill after the operation to have the depo injection and I was told then I was pregnant. I had a scan and it showed I was six weeks pregnant. I am 12 weeks on Monday I have been so worried because if the operation harming the baby the medication I was on post op. the doctors have said that everything should be ok but I won't know any different until my 20 week scan. I really hope everything is ok with your friend hunni.

@ Amielou26 what a relief to hear you and the baby are both doing fine. Congrats to you!

Thanks for the update, my friend went to see her ob too, they will have to do a scan when she is 10.weeks I guess, so far she is holding up well.

Out of curiosity I wanted to ask how has your post op nutrition been? what Vitamins are you? Regular and prenates? How do you get in your caloric intake? Last but not least, have you lost any #s? And if yes is it safe?

Well once again wishing you very best with your beautiful journey :)

I needed to have my 4 wisdom teeth out in the first trimester of pregnancy, I was all set to have them out in the chair, but my ob and my dentist both said that a ga and strong IV pain relief would actually be safer for the baby than the stress of doing it while I was awake. I hope everything is going well for your friend and that she is not worrying too much.

My surgery actually started a little late bc the pregnancy test wasn't back yet (even though I had been in pre-op for at least 4 hours and they did the blood test as soon as I got there). A blood test is more accurate than a urine test. I knew I wasn't pregnant but they have to do it to make sure. I guess it's possible someone could be a day or two pregnant when they have surgery and it wouldn't show up in the bloodwork yet. I'm sure that most people use BC prior to and after surgery, but it's not 100 percent.

Alisha

I have lost 3 and half stone since the 28th January. I take frolic acid and pregnacare supplement. When I found out I was pregnant I called my surgeon that day he told me to stop all the medication they put me on which I did.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
