4 Days Post-op and I can eat a little too easily ?

Recommended Posts

Today was my first day off the liquids, I was scheduled to eat only as much as comfortable from a serving of oatmeal topped with a tablespoon of sugar free jam and 1 tablespoon unsweetened yogurt.

That was nice and healthy, but I was able to eat it ALL, over about 20 minutes, without any problem at all - WTH ?

I was expecting a LOT more restriction that this. Now I am worried !

I've been the same.. I ate two cups of broth in one sitting my first day out of the hospital.. Was able to drink my Protein shakes with ease once I was cleared for those.. I assume I can drink so well because my sleeve is not inflamed... but on my first attempt at eating I ate nearly a whole egg WITH 1/4 cup of refried Beans... I read about people who can't get past a tablespoon of food when they start, and I'm chowing down on what is considered the "maximum" for my stage.... AND I didn't eat to the point of "fullness" just until I was "satisfied" Granted that's still restriction, but I just figured it would be more so early on.

I've had a few people tell me not to worry, that I should really feel the restriction when I start on my denser Proteins. We'll see on Wednesday when I can start adding some meats.

The only true way to not over eat is to measure and journal everything you put in your mouth. I am only two weeks out but everything I eat gets measured. Eating until I was satisfied it was got me to 270 lbs.

By "eating until satisfaction" I am following my doctor's instructions. As outlined in my post, my food was measured. The concern is the amount of restriction we feel. the whole point of the surgery is so that we will be able to eat until the point of "satisfaction" but not necessarily "fullness"... and be satisfied with a small amount of food.< /p>

Everyone heals at different rates. As such some people will be able to eat more at an earlier point then others. Remember that when you are eating soft foods and purees they will leak through the pyloric sphincter in the bottom of your stomach and into your intestines making you able to put more in, hence why you should feel restriction when you proceed to dense Proteins. Please keep in mind when you are think of eating till you feel satisfied that the amount you are eating now and feeling satisfied at is a lot less then it was before surgery. In the early stages it is important to measure your food until you get used to knowing what the feelings are since they are not anything like what you are used to, but once you get used to them you will be able to know when to quit eating. Good Luck.

You will feel that restriction as soon as you eat some chicken or tuna! Trust me, you won't feel it so much right now because your tummy doesn't have to work too hard to break down soft food/liquid. When you start eating things that are harder to break down (more dense) you will know the surgery worked! ;)

Thanks for all the comments.

Indeed it is about the feeling of restriction, only 4 days and that oatmeal went down too easy. I mean before surgery I could barely eat a whole cup of oatmeal anyway lol

For lunch I had pureed chick peas and cottage cheese along with canned peas and asparagus that I chewed to a pulp. It was funny to look at my "toddler".plate ha!

The amount that I was able to eat were absolutely less than before, but still more than I expected.and while everything was noted and measured, I did not expect to be able to eat it all as others have mentioned I had read about people being stuffed after a tablespoon or two of food...that won't be my case.

I can see that I will be able to eat at least a cup of food, as I am now and while I did not try to eat more; nothing in my body made me feel awkward or that I should stop before I had it all.

So far I am ON PLAN,and lost some weight already but I see that I am not as restricted as some are.

Be careful. Your new tummy is numb right now. You won't feel anything like "full" or "awkward" right now. No one does. Keep measuring, it's the only way to know when your sleeve is full and you don't want to damage your suture line. Good to hear you've lost weight. :)

MrsG thank you for this important detail. I am still using the occasional oxy pain relieving pill, so indeed maybe I am not feeling my sleeve as I should: I would have never thought of that !

I was careful to remain on plan and have not eaten more that the daily menu, all things weighed and measured, so I should be ok, but that is a GREAT point that they SHOULD TELL everyone after surgery.

I think this information should be a sticky note on the forum:

BEWARE: RIGHT OUT OF SURGERY AND FOR A VARIABLE SHORT PERIOD YOU MAY BE UNABLE TO FEEL YOUR STOMACH AS YOU SHOULD, DUE TO SWELLING AND PAIN MEDICATION. DON'T GAGE YOUR FULLNESS BY THE FULLNESS YOU FEEL, USE INSTEAD THE PORTIONS INDICATED AS YOU MAY OVEREAT AND NOT NOTICE, THEREBY INJURING YOUR SLEEVE.

DUHH! ME AND ALL MEDICAL PERSONEL!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
