Craziest Patient

Recommended Posts

Well guys I had my surgery on 11/27/06. Prior to going to TJ I was posting about how nervous I was, and couldn't quit smoking. Anyway, all went exceedingly well. What makes me the craziest patient is the following: I arrived at the clinic at app 9:30AM, and had a specific request that my surgery be done by noon. I probably had the whole place on edge. I calmed down after one of my doctors threatened to take my watch and cell phone so I couldn't keep watching the time. I finally went at 5:45PM and on the way to the OR one of the two guys that were transporting me said he had a surprise for me "a stripper" in the OR. When I entered I said "where's my stripper," and the anesthesiologist started to do a dance and go around the IV pole, I practically fell out of my wheelchair. When I got on the table someone asked where I had gotten my tattoo, to which I asked which one? at the same time the anesthesiologist injected some medication, it was 5:50PM, I know because I was still wearing my watch, Dr. Huacuz took it off and put it in his pocket. The last thing I said was "6 men attending to me, I'm in heaven." The next thing I knew I was waking up in my room with Dr. Huacuz at my bedside. I was just wheeled into my room, got up, pulled out my IV, took myself off the monitor, stumbling around the whole time. The poor Dr. is standing there going "what are you doing?" I told him "I gotta make a phone call." I grabbed my cell, made the call, and took off down the hallway, with dear Dr. trying to keep me safe. A long story short within 30 mins of leaving OR I was outside smoking. That was day one. I was up all night, poor nurse had to keep up with me. Next morning I was up, bathed, and dressed, ready to talk a walk to the mall. Dear doc asked that I wait until he got there to go to fluoro to see my band, I obliged. I saw my band, and on the way back to clinic told doc to drop me off about 2.5 miles from clinic at a market and I will make my way back, he looked petrified, but did as I asked. Long story short, if that's possible, I shopped, had to stop and sit on the sidewalk on my way back, I was now scared, I had pushed it a little too far. Thank God, I got back to the clinic safely, and am now home. I know they are glad to be rid of me, a potential liability. Dr. Huacuz and his team are awesome. I would recommend him anytime.

Let me add that everyone that came into the clinic the day I was leaving already knew of me before meeting me. I think I might have left an impression. Would you say? And to crown it all I'm an ICU nurse. You would think I'd behave better.

did you grab a steak and wash it down with a whiskey and Coke on your way back to the clinic? Cause that would be about the only other 'no-no's you didn't do! :)

Thats a funny story. BTW, I haven't stopped smoking yet either. Isn't it a nasty habit, don't know why I do it. Good luck with your weight loss.

As an ICU nurse then you have been well taught on the nuances of "crazy." I'll bet you've got a mean "crazy family member" routine as well! :Banane48: :Banane17: ;)

Please take good care of yourself.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
