Swallowing pains n stomach pains

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm at day 3 post OP. I'd like to know if this discomfort when I swallow liquids and stomach/cramping will ever go away??? :( I was able to drink 50 oz liquid ( chicken broth n water), but am pushing myself to sip more. It just tummy hurts really bad when I swallow liquid. I've been active walking a lot, n passing gas. Also, do you wake up in the middle of the night to walk and sip liquids?? I'm feeling so discouraged.

It gets better. Your stomach is healing from being cut open. I am 3 weeks out. It hurts now if I take to big of a gulp of liquid or eat a little to much, but it is a different kind of pain. Hang in there it gets much better!

Oh and I don't wake up in the middle of the night to sip Water or walk. If you have support hose wear them when you sleep, do your walking during the day.

As soon as the swelling goes down, it is like night and day. I was like you and about 5 days I got up and could drink like I used to. I was very excited. It gets better and better.

50 oz!?!? That is awesome to do that so early on!!! I'm a month out and I still can't seem to get enough liquids in! Good for you. Hang in there, everything seems rough in the beginning but it gets much easier over time. ;)

I'm on day 8 post-op and I really started to feel more like myself yesterday. I've heard from others that you feel better in about a week and that ended up true for me. I am sitting here dring my Protein Shake with no problem, unlike the first few days post-op. :)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
