MichiganChic 3,262 Posted March 30, 2013 Not for me. My doc says no pop ever, and I never really drank much anyway, so it's something I plan to avoid indefinitely.
Fiddleman 4,376 Posted March 30, 2013 I'm with Olivers mom I dont drink it ever. I learned a long time ago that they color it with motor oil. Google gross things in food and you will see. I am officially grossed out now after reading: http://www.rodale.com/gross-food Ug, I feel so violated by the food industry and am now in the fetal position.... 1 thenerd reacted to this

Irene1970 8 Posted March 30, 2013 No!!! Never again drink soda. It will stretch your pouch. Sodas are no more with the gastric surgery.
SpaceDust 585 Posted March 30, 2013 No!!! Never again drink soda. It will stretch your pouch. Sodas are no more with the gastric surgery. Actually, per my studies and conversation with bariatric specialists it's highly unlikely to cause any significant stretching with a sleeve. The fundus (the stretchy part of the stomach) is the portion of your stomach that is mostly or totally removed in a sleeve surgery. The idea of stretching is a holdover from the gastric bypass, in which the pouch does include fundus material and will stretch. That said, carbonation can create discomfort, the acids in many sodas can be hard on your stomach, and regular sweet sodas are like drinking a sugar bowl. It definitely isn't anything I want to play with early on, and when I'm ready to give carbonation a go, I'll stick to sparkling Water with a splash of juice. Jenny12 361 Posted March 31, 2013 I drink diet coke and diet sprite almost daily. I drink it over ice and have no issues at all. I didn't do this surgery to become a complete health nut....I did it to help control my binge eating. And it's doing exactly that. 2 DrmBig4Evr and mi2sc reacted to this
neekoal 37 Posted March 31, 2013 I can't drink soda at all, I've taken a few sips from hubbies drink when I'm desperate and it felt awful. It actually is uncomfortable, I'm not interested, I'll stick to raspberry iced tea if I want sweet.
Dobeigh 69 Posted March 31, 2013 I had it 2 weeks post op. at first it hurt but now it doesn't and I just sip. It does make me gassy too so be careful. I mostly drink Water. Also, diet coke and coke zero are BIG NO NOs!!! It hurts so bad I think because its acidic and carbonated. So I drink diet sprite or something like that. And not much of it either. Irene1970 8 Posted April 1, 2013 Had a first rough day back to work. Was able to drink 1 Protein Drink and my crystal light all day. I did amazing. I ate my Tomato Soup and my smashed Beans.< /p>
johnlatte 1,232 Posted April 1, 2013 I'm totally off soda. It was a trigger food for me, so the best thing for me to do is just say no. Beer too, although I miss beer more. I tried a hard cider the other day just as an experiment, but it was good, but the bubbles where just awful. I drink flavored water or tea now and that's fine. There are some trade offs that you want to make to get healthy. Like the op I didn't have the surgery to become a healthnut, but I made a commitment to myself that if I had the surgery, I would do everything I possibly could the become as healthy as I possibly could. I don't feel like I am denying myself anything because I don't want to drink a can full of chemicals and sugar (or sugar substitutes) anymore.
swampdonkey 36 Posted April 1, 2013 Iam curious about beer, I plan on giving it a try Memorial Day that will put me around 12 weeks out. I am not a big soda drinker but I do like a occasional beer once in awhile on a hot day sitting on the beach or on the boat.
Fiddleman 4,376 Posted April 2, 2013 Not so much a beer person myself, but do appreciate a fine wine or nicely blended and flavorful cocktails. My drink schedule is about once a month after I hit month 6. Usually it is planned with a nice dinner, but sometimes it is when I am not the DD and I enter a "what the hell" moment. I try not too have to many "what the hell" moments and stay according to plan.
iggychic 1,405 Posted April 2, 2013 I wouldn't drink it in the first six weeks...that's dangerous, but I was allowed carbonation at four months. I was a big bubbly Water drinker...in fact never drank anything else but I gave it up for the surgery and honestly, it's full of crap so I haven't minded not drinking it since. I do drink champagne and find that it isn't hard on me. I find soda though to be harder as the bubble are bigger and bother me too much (I've only had a few sips since surgery). Sometimes it sounds good so I take a taste, but I seem to have lost the taste for it (too sweet even if it's diet and too many bubbles). That's probably not a bad thing. I love champagne and have it maybe every other week or so now. I enjoy it. I think if you can limit your treat to being a treat it won't be all bad. Carbonation will NOT stretch your stomach unless you are in the healing phase where it could cause issues with your suture line. I am facing a future feeding tube because my stomach is too small. Believe me my doc would have told me to drink a six pack of soda a day if it would actually cause a stomach to stretch Don't listen to old wives tales. cencalmom 3 Posted April 5, 2013 My doctor said nothing carbonated after surgery because it could cause complications. My nut said it can cause you to not feel as full as you should. I did try one sip of soda and hated it I didn't like the taste or the carbonation. It also hurt my stomach. Before surgery I loved coke zero and would drink a six pack per day. Tried the soda last week and I was sleeved on 12/31/
