I had my 9 month post-op visit yesterday (just shy of 10 months). I'm -106 since surgery, -121 total. We started talking goal weight. I weighed in @ 219. He feels I can hit goal weight by 15 - 18 months post-op. His number for my goal is 161 lbs. His basis for this is that my lean body mass of 124 plus 30% body fat (37 lbs).

However, that puts my BMI still in the "overweight" range. He said that my bones are going to be much heavier than the average 5'3" woman because of my lifetime of obesity. He feels that 140 lbs, which is where I would have to be to have a "normal" BMI, is simply to low for me.

Thoughts? How did you set your goal weight?

Well when you get there you can decide. You may want to be smaller ot you may be fine at 160. This is not a problem. Just keep up the good work, you are doing great.

My dr hasn't talked about a goal with me yet I'm only 9 weeks out. But I was 175 back in the day and other than needing to tone up I was happy there so I made that my personal goal. I will see where I am when I get there. It's also the high end on the range for a person of my age and height. I can pull off a heaver weight because I'm so tall (5'10) and I didn't look heavy then I was in a size 12-14. I did have some extra chubs on my tummy then but I felt good in clothes.

Tiffykins, who was a great resource for me when I first joined this group had this same issue. Her bones were heavier from years of being obese. And you will have extra skin. I suggest shooting for the Dr's goal and then seeing how you feel at that weight.

Another frequent former poster, Lil Miss Diva, looked fabulous at a BMI higher than normal. I think she has the same issues with heavier bones. Plus she exercises like a fiend and muscle weighs more.

Thanks Ladies. I'm just going to keep working at it and see where I end up.

Plastics are hopefully in my future. My insurance requires a 20% weight loss for 2 years. I'm far beyond the 20% and rapidly approaching a year. I just pray they don't change the coverage before I get there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
