To splurge or not to splurge

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am having a great dilemma. My surgery was scheduled for April 16th. I started preop diet this past Saturday. My surgeons office said I could scrap the diet until the first if I want but the longer I'm on it the better. I'm having a hard time fighting the urge to just eat what I want and then have that "last supper" perhaps at my favorite restaurant. Good idea or just man up and stick with it?

Man up and stick with it. The bottomw line, you don't need to have a 'last meal' because after surgery you can have the same favorite meal if you watn, you'll just be able to eat less of it, and then you'll feel even more satisfied knowing A) you feel full and only ate 1/4 of what you might have eaten before, and B) that you are losing weight and were still able to enjoy your favorite food. Once you get past the first few months it essentially turns into 'everything in moderation', and that is how the rest of your life will be. The pre-op shrinks your liver, so for me it was a no brainer to be as liver shrunk and ready for the knife as possible. The pre-op is the worst part, just get it done with. Good luck!

I did a Protein Shake w/ one meal of "lean and green" as my pre-op. I planned out a last meal of smoked prime rib and hoo boy I am so glad I did. I knew greens and red meat and red wine were/are months down the road, so that's what I had. If you plan out your meals and savor them, not binge, then go for it. If you're going to be an out of control food vacuum, stick with the pre op diet because that sounds more responsible.

Congrats on the surgery date! I had a tough time following the preop diet. All I could think about was yhe food I would probably never get to eat again. If you're EXTREMELY heavy with a bmi over 40...they recommend it to shrink the liver so complications during surgery are less likely. Its also good to get into a routine for after surgery. I splurged...had my favorite meal and lots of it. There is nothing wrong with that...im glad i did it. Just get it out of your system as quickly as possible and set a goal and get prepared.

Also...use this time yo get used to your Protein shakes. Learn to love them. That and Water will need to be your best friends for the two weeks post op!

Good luck girl, have that last supper!

I had several "food funerals" and don't regret them. I actually didn't even gain weight with them; something about having my eyes on the prize kept my portions in check anyway. Good luck, whatever you decide :)

I had a last supper. I didn't go 3000 calories crazy but I did enjoy Red Lobster the night before my pre-op appointment. If you are going to splurg do it now, because later you are definately risking your surgery getting postponed.

I had one last hurrah, but I stuck the to pre-op otherwise (mine was pretty short). It was my wife's birthday and we went to our all time favorite place. It was all good, and when it was done, I was ready to get the surgery on. I wouldn't get all buck wild with it, but go have one good meal. Keep in mind that you'll be able to go again sometime down the road, you will just have to eat like a normal person.

I had many food funerals the month before pre op. I wanted to eat all my favorite foods at all my favorite restaurants and I did. But when I started the pre op diet (which mine was 2 weeks) I never cheated once. I am not setting the world on fire but I am 66 and can not exercise and am down 59 lbs in 4 months. Do as you like. It is your life and we never want regrets.

A week before the start of my pre-op diet I went on an Atkins like diet to get off carbs, and I weaned myself off diet soda. 2 days before my pre-op diet I did have a food funeral, we went to olive garden one night and then ate a ton of chinese food the next. I am currently on day 6 of my pre-op diet and my only cheat was having a little more grilled chicken breast with my dinner. While it may not be a good idea for everyone getting my last cravings out of my system, and cutting out the carbs and stuff before hand has helped me stay on my pre-op diet. I still have 15 days more to go (high BMI) and am feeling better everyday.

I've started to adjust my diet by incorporating more Protein shakes (flavored with 1/4 c. berries, half a banana, coffee, or a tablespoon of PB2) as Meal Replacements - right now I do at least one meal a day 6 days a week, sometimes two meals. Either Saturday or Sunday I let myself off the hook a little (I'm still 3.5 months out from my pre-op diet, at least, so I'm not going to be super strict with myself just yet). I'm making a conscious effort to rebalance my plate so that starchy carbs are a small bit player on the dish, while Protein and non-starchy produce take the leading roles. I hope to be fairly close to my pre-op diet by the end of June, although I will likely still be at 1000 calories a day, more or less, until I start the diet for real.

I actually have planned two splurges after July 1, though - I will have BBQ on the 4th of July and I won't feel guilty about it, and I will have a nice birthday dinner without worrying about calories, protein, carbs, or fat in the middle of the month, probably a few days before I start my diet for real. With those two events planned, I think I will be satisfied to live within the confines of what I need to do for that week before the surgery, and I suspect I will have dropped a few more pounds between now and then if I stay on top of things now :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
