Food Choice - Hot Vs Cold

Recommended Posts

Hi.. I'm 11 weeks post op.. and notice an odd eating habit..

Before being sleeved.. I loved eating food that was cold.. yogurt, milk, cold Soup and salads! I would cool down everything before eating

It would hardly take 15 minutes to finish my favorite yogurt serving..

Now! I have one open for over 4 hours.. (14gms of delicious Protein right there!).. but every spoon I try to get in.. feels repulsive.

I only want to eat food that is hot or at least warm (my mom would love that!)

Has this happened with anyone else????

I hope this doesn't happen to me! When I was right out of surgery, anything very cold would give me stomach contractions, but this resolved in a few days. Hot things still feel really nice, but cold is fine too. Icy things don't apeal to me though. I haven't had a popcicle or anything yet, it just doesn't sound yummy.. but very cold drinks are fine. When did this start happening to you? Is this something new or has it always been this way for you since being sleeved?

I think this started troubling me when i started trying soft foods.. 3 to 4 weeks ago..

But i recall.. i could not drink my apple juice at the hospital until it reached room temperature. so maybe it started then.

It might change back. I like things room temp-ish before, then for the longest time I craved everything cold (surprised I didnt turn into an ice pop!) after. Now I'm back to everything room temp or a little hotter.

Taste buds changed too. I dont mind turkey or asian as much, and not a huge huge fan of kielbasa/hot dogs/sausage/etc anymore. Used to love Shoprite iced tea, but its too tangy now.For a bit during complications the only thing I would drink was watered down apple juice (HATED before, and hate now). Still a carb fan though.. lol

I use to love everything warm except my drinks but now after my surgery I crave everything I've cold....I to have eaten so many popsicles, ice all day ect. My taste buds have changed drastically too, stuff I loved before surgery tastes like crap now. I can also smell things from a mile away too since surgery.....ok maybe not a mile but I can smell EVERYTHING, good and bad! Just go with what works for you, we're all different!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
