Soo although my surgery is not until May i cant stop thinking about the pain, that I might be in. I am what you can call a big baby!! I tear when I am having blood work, and having my blood pressure checked hurts me. So to say the very least my pain threshold is very low. Can you guys prepare on what to expect?

The procedure isn't what I'd consider to be extremely "painful". I've been thru a lot of surgeries and this was one of the least painful. When I woke up, I immediately felt pressure in my chest. To be honest, the air/gas was more painful than anything else. If I went a little too long without pushing the button for more medication then my stomach would burn where the incisions were. Other than that, the only pain I felt was "sore" like whenever you work out too hard and your muscles ache. After about 5 days I didn't really hurt at all. They keep you on morphine in the hospital and you sleep a lot so honestly, it's not real bad.

I was feeling relatively pain free by day 4 post op. No pain, just some pressure and soreness. I have a fairly high pain threshold, but worst case, you should be relatively fine within a week. You may still be sore, but no tears! :)

I had pain, the worst was when I first woke up. My advise to you is to be your own patient advocate. The nurses and doctors don't want you to be in pain, so if a medication isn't taking the pain away...tell them, they will get you something else. I made sure to tell them when I needed pain meds, and they made sure to give them to me whenever needed. Also most of the docs set you up with a pain pump of morphine, so when you need a little extra pain med you can administer it yourself. Good luck!

It's not that bad at all. You will be ok. It is mostly uncomfortable at times, but not that painful.

It really is not bad for most people. My advice is pain meds. Ask early and often. That is what they are there for.

Also, for most people, the fear and stress of the upcoming surgery are WAY worse then the surgery and recovery in it's self.

Good luck, you can do it!

I also have a low tolerance for pain, so I will tell you about me. I needed my painkillers!!! The button you get in hospital will handle your pain, don't worry. Get up walking as soon as they will let you to deal with the gas. When I got home I was walking several times a day but short slow distances. I had to get pain medication refilled a few times. I was on it for two weeks round the clock, then for a week at two doses a night, down to one dose a night. Just before four weeks out I am off. Still feels like I did a lot of crunches, but that is not a big deal.

That being said I do not have a problem with addictive tendencies and I was able to quit the narcotics with no problems.

It did hurt but it was not unbearable, the Rx and OTC managed the pain just fine. It is worth it. I'm just over a month out and no regrets at all!!

This is the most painless surgery I've had! The first 36 hours are uncomfortable, but I was home the next day and didn't take anything stronger than tylenol for pain. It's a quick bounce back kind of surgery. Lots of people go back to work in a week. I could have, easily (teacher)

I'm a punk for pain and I always ask prior to surgery what the surgeon plan to prescribe. I must have asked my surgeon a zillion times how much pain I would be in, he assured me that it wouldn't be bad. I didn't have any pain at all, just a feeling of wearing a belt that was too tight.

The gas pain in my shoulders was the only pain that I had and so I walked as much as I could and that helped. I also was told to bring some GasX strips with me and they really helped. I promise it will be worth the little bit of discomfort you will endure!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
