Taste buds are changin'

Recommended Posts

...I am a diet coke, I freely admit it. However, I had not had a single drop since March 3, three days before my sleeve. I got through the withdrawal & headaches. I haven't craved soda at all. I am not thirsty since my sleeve and luckily not hungry...

Last week, I poured 2 or 4 oz of Diet Stewart's Rootbeer & allowed to melt into ice last week - tasted the same to me, but I didn't want any more of it to drink. I wasn't even craving it...just curiosity. It didn't make me sick or anything.

...tonight, I did the same with diet coke tonight...but it was horrible; it tasted like syrup..the way I remember a regular pepsi or coke would taste to me...I am in total shock! How could our taste buds change so? Again, I wasn't craving it or anything, just curious. It didn't make me sick.

...so I guess I am a Water drinker now...but I am not at 64 oz - not even half...

...also, I had a single Weight Watchers Laughing cow cheese tonight...best cheese I have ever eaten!

I will freely admit that I was a Pepsi! I would drink 3 or 4 large one's a day! Ugh!!! No wonder I was 300lbs!! I, also, can no longer drink them. They taste like carbonated Water to me. Yuck!! This has happened with other things as well. Milk and even turkey. Turkey does NOT taste right anymore. Weird, right??? Happy that Pepsi is no longer a temptation!! :D

I was a freak for Diet Dr. Pepper... Yep I would drink at least 3 a day..... I loved them.... Funny though I do not even have the slightest desire for one now. I never in a million years thought that would happen. knock on wood lol! I thought that would be my biggest struggle. My food tastes have changed as well. I used to be one of those persons that could eat the same thing for days and it would not bother me. Now forget it. I need variety.... I can not stand to repeat the same meal day after day. That is funny to me also! So yes, I agree my tastes have completely changed!

I find that it's hard to tolerate the 'preservatives' that they put in things...and that I'm craving freshly made food vs pre packaged...weird..I was not big on sodas before surgery and lately I find most things like crystal light have such a funny taste, so I've been mostly sticking to plain Water.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
