Can we have sugar?

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 weeks post op. Can we eat sugar? I've been buying sugar free everything but really want a good Froyo. I've read about dumping but gastric bypass patients, but was told you don't have to worry about that with the sleeve?

I was told no sugar ever :( feeling a little deprived right about now. I will be 3 weeks this thursday. Ready to eat some good food. Even a tiny bit. What are you eating now?

you can have sugar and the dumping isn't really an issue with the sleeve, though some people find they don't tolerate sugar anymore. The main point is that refined sugar is awful for you and makes you gain weight like gangbusters. So while having some sugar once in a while is ok, i wouldn't make it a habit or you will see yourself starting to pack on the lbs. Though natural sugars, like honey and that found in fruit and 100% juice is fine.

Are you still on liquids or progressed to soft/pureed? I was 2 weeks Monday-still on liquids.

My yogurt shop has wonderful! SF french vanilla frozen yogurt. I had some the other day (its on my list). I wish I had a camera to take a pic of the cashiers face when I put that huge bowl on the scale with my ounce of frozen yogurt lol. Came out to .58!

My yogurt shop has one yogurt on hand that is mainly for diabetics, its sugar free, and its pretty darn good, they rotate the flavor so you can try different tastes.

CAN you have it? Yes.

SHOULD you have it? No.

RESIST!

This ^^^ Not to be mean but why would you spend tons of money and have a part of your body removed just to turn around and put that same old crap back in. I guess thinking of it that way is how I have been able to deal with those desires. Its just a waste to me.

Good luck.

Because the point of the surgery is to reset your thinking and eating in balance--not on some strict sick person's diet for life.

At 3 weeks out, I would follow my doc's instructions. Your body is still healing and adjusting to the changes. Dumping sugar into your system will probably not go well.

I have symptoms of dumping if I over-indulge in sweets.. flushing, tachycardia, sweats and about 30 minutes later cramping. I do not have diarrhea with such an episode. Now, I have a goofy GI tract which is one of the main reasons I did not want a roux-en-y procedure so this could just be my crazy gut.

I prefer Stevia or Truvia these days.

More than 1-2 bites of something with sugar makes me feel VERY sick.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
