Gas and reflux post surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello....I am 8 days post op. Is it normal to experience some mild reflux and gas bubbles? The bubbles feel like they are coming up my throat when I eat or drink. Thanks

Try slowing down your eating or eating less. For awhile you will have to trial and error your ways of eating until you adjust it to what works for you

I had this too.. A lot of people take a ppi after surgery.. Did your doctor give you a prescription?

I never had an issue before surgery and only had it for a couple of weeks afterward so I didn't take anything . But for a lot of people the acid blockers really help.

Yes I take Prevacid. I had relux issues before surgery so maybe he will have to increase it. I just started on puree food this morning and I was only able to eat about 1/2 of a 1/4 cup at Breakfast and lunch. We'll see. Thanks!

As miss AntiBand said just go really slow, everything in our digestion is so screwed up right now. It takes weeks for things to calm down.

But if its really bothersome after a while do ask the dr about an increase or change

Good luck to you!

My doctor told me that reflux wld be worse after surgery. Its not been worse for me but will act up if I eat spicy food. Are there certain things you are eating or drinking that may trigger this? You may hv to up what you normally take. I wld talk to the doctor about all of this

Thanks for the replies. I have an appointment with my surgeon on Thursday so I'll tell him whats happening. I had egg salad for lunch, maybe I put too much low fat mayo in it.

Kortolano-My surgeon did say sometimes people with reflux get it so bad it does not even respond to medications. In that case, he said the sleeve could be converted to a bypass. But, I don't want that to happen obviously. That makes sense-stopping and walking a bit between bites. I find if I slouch while eating or drinking and for a little bit afterward, it makes the reflux and gas worse. So I try to sit as straight as possible and not sit too much after eating.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
