My surgeon wants patients off Protein supplements after 6 weeks--he wants you to start getting at least 60 g of protein from meals alone. At first you can use up to one supplement if you are falling short, but he wants you to wean off of them. So I would say the answer is no, unless you aren't getting enough protein from your food--in which case you would probably want to look at your diet, bc even as a vegetarian, I can get close to 20 g protein/meal and if I'm short, I have a Greek yogurt. I do still use supplements/powders sparingly when I'm trying to get above 80 go of protein, though I don't plan to do it forever. I think it would be easier to get all from solids if you aren't a vegetarian.

Am I (do we) have to stay on Protein supplements for life??? Thats a pretty discouraging thought!!!

No.....you will most definitely be able to get your Protein in with "real" food! I am four months out and can eat may protein (for a while now)

I do LIKE my Protein shakes though and will have those for Breakfast not because I "need" it though

Thank you! Thats encouraging!! Also, I'm still feeling uncomfortable sensations after I drink and it hits my stomach. Feels like when you'd drink coke on a very empty stomach and you'd get that stomach spasm feeling. Will that ever leave??

Yes that goes away! (i had that) In fact in the first month there will be all sorts of mystery pains coming and going... They all work themselves out and all will be good! I'm saying this by the way after running errands all morning and eating out at lunch having a normal time of it :)

I did not feel even close to human the first week or two ( I'm a baby) but after three weeks going into the 4th everything was healed and so much better! As a matter of fact we went to Disneyland at six weeks walked all day everyday and rode all the rides! :)

You can get all your Protein in from foods, like others said. But I have trouble getting in enough, so I still really like my Protein supplements, especially since I'm really bad about getting in Breakfast. If I drink an Isopure zero carb every morning I know I'm starting off my day with some good protein to work off of. So it's nice to have them as back up sometimes for those days you just don't feel like it.

The uncomfortable sensations do go away. It just takes time for your body to adjust. It is still really easy for me to hit that past full point accidentally, but I never have any discomfort drinking anymore.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
