Did anyone not loose their hair - if so what did you do?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've seen a lot of posts from people commiserating about looking hair at around 3 mos. It seems this happens to most people. What I'm curious about is hearing from anyone who didn't have this happen - is there anyone out there who hasn't had this happen or happen very minimally?

If so, what did you do? Were there Vitamins you took, did you get every ounce of Protein in, use a special Shampoo?

I'm convinced this doesn't have to happen and I think we can learn from each other. I did a very low calorie medically supervised, ketogenic diet that involved B12 shots 3 times a week. My hair became thicker, fuller and shinier, through that and I was looking 20+ pounds a month. There has to be a way to prevent this!

NtvTxn didn't lose her hair at all, she credits it with getting all of her Protein in daily. I am only 2 weeks post op so I can't tell you anything yet from my experience.

Hate to be a downer here, but I really believe those who don't lose a noticable amount of hair have genetics working in their favor. Why do I say this? Because I tried it all.

I was exercising like crazy, taking Biotin daily, getting in excess of recommended Protein and liquids. I took all my Vitamins and then some. (Fish oil, for instance) I was getting around 1,800 calories in daily, too.

What WAS happening was I was losing fat. It is MY belief that it is the hormones stored within the fat flooding the system that causes the increase in Hair loss. I say increase because we naturally lose hair every day, regardless of diet.

I started losing at 6 months out and it subsided around the 9 month mark. At 1 year out, you would have never known I went through it.

Do a site search on hair loss. This is probably the 3rd most common question/concern here. There are hundreds of posts about it.

I haven't lost any hair and I will be 6 months post op on the 2nd of April! I get in all my Protein and eat a well balanced diet with carbs. I probably get in about 90+ grams of protein a day, usually 80 is the minimum but I mostly end up a little over 100g. I haven't noticed any difference in thickness and I continue to get my hair thinned when I go to the stylist because it's so thick and heavy. I'm not saying that it wont happen eventually but it hasn't happened so far and I still get tons of compliments on it. I also relax and color it every 6-10 weeks.

The thought of losing my precious long blonde hair was almost enough for me to cancel my surgery..... this was my thing- my security blanket. I was the fat girl with the cute face and the lovely blonde hair!! I started losing hair around 4 months and it slowed at 8 months... I was a wreck about it and recall sobbing twice. I kept up on my Protein and liquids, Biotin, and used nioxin Shampoo and conditioner. But I survived! I still have long pretty blonde hair! I lost some but nobody could tell besides me. It does grow back- and the chances of anyone noticing are slim. So now I am the healthy, average sized person with the cute face and the pretty blonde hair! I get noticed for me not my hair now! Yay. Btw 20 months post-op.

My whole point: don't fret about this-- it doesn't help., its going to happen almost no matter what! You will be fine!

There are several factors that can result in the hair loss, and to a small degree anticipating it can make it feel more than it is sometimes.

And then there are people like me. I lost alot of hair. I went to sports clips and got a short haircut and even though it began to grow back after a few months and now is reasonably thick I kept the short cut.

The way I looked at it was sports clips knows how to deal with thinning hair, working with so many guys...ha!

I should have also added that my surgeon, Dr. Acceves, recommends taking zinc to prevent Hair loss. I'll be trying it.

I'm 6 mths post op & am glad to say I have had no more than the average hair loss that we all experience w/ or w/out surgery. I had my hair thinned out about a wk ago. I take all my Vitamins & get my Protein in. I've attached a pic fr/ last wk of my hair(plz excuse my nose) it looks weird at this angle.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
