I started my journey of thinking about SVG in August of last year. A lot has happened in my life since than, and it seems like the surgery is just a myth. I have gotten a divorce, moved, and changed my job since seeing my bariatric surgeon for the first time. It has been a long journey. I just submitted the last of my paperwork to the case manager at my surgeon's office. I am waiting to hear that my case has been approved and I am ready to be scheduled and start the pre-op diet. I am starting to get excited again.

Making the decision to even start this journey was also hard for me. I was a national competitive athlete for 10 years growing up and stayed muscular and in great physicial condition. I have struggled with my weight since I stopped competing. I was never a size 6 or extremely thin. I had to make the decision after not being able to lose any weight after trying for more than 3 months. I lost 2 pounds to gain 5. I was walking 2 miles a day and eating healthy. This is my last hope. I don't have a lot of cormobidities, but I am pre-diabetic and I have a long family history of diabetes and heart disease.

I am so ready at this point! Should be schedule in April!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
