Insurance six month supervised program

Recommended Posts

I don't know if the weight loss is specifically what they are looking for. I went for many months and would lose and gain a couple of pounds. They still approved me based on my visits - not my weight gain/loss. Make sure your doctor writes or dictates everything down. Make sure you talk about weight related stuff - can't sleep, knees hurt, feel shaky if I don't eat... all things they can document to put in your chart. Good luck - and the time goes by fast!

I'm in 3 months into my medically supervised diet. I see my doctor (visits paid by insurance) monthly, and she has me see a nutritionist weekly (these visits paid by me!). I've lost over 30 lbs. so far. My BMI was 41.7 prior to the diet; worried that if I lose too much the BMI will drop enough to cause the insurance company to say 'no' to covering the surgery.

Feels silly to pay money each week to the nutritionist and then sabotage the potential for weight loss. But, I know I need the lap band. I will not be able to sustain this weight loss without this tool.

By the way, the nutritionist, who has never had a weight problem herself, is completely against the lap band. No surprise there! But, my doctor is supportive.

Starting weight: 287 :grouphug:

Current weight: 254

Goal w/surgery: 152

That's awesome that you are losing weight! But... if your insurance says a certain BMI to get the lapband you may need to slow down a bit. I gained and lost during my supervised visits but my intention was never to lose too much and kick myself out of the ballgame. I know it's a game we play but remember the insurance is playing a game too - insisting on the visits hoping you will lose so they don't have to pay - craziness!

I also had to wait 6 months. My surgery was approved 1 day after the inforamtion was submitted. I never missed an appointment and did exactly as they asked me to do. The time goes by so fast. They payed 80% I only had to pay my deducltible and the 80% it wasnt much. Wish you the best!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
