Surgery - What to expect? :/ TMI!

Recommended Posts

I've had a ton of surgeries in my life but this one is taking the cake on getting me nervous! I'd rather go back through spine surgery then this one.

Don't get me wrong..I WANT to do this...I NEED to do this but can you please share your surgery experience with me? How did you feel after and what should I expect when it comes to pain? Any other info you can give would be great too! :)

I'm freaking here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm also nervous about them cutting part of my stomach out. It's just a weird thought!

I can't speak for everyone but my experience was not horrible. I am 3 days post op. I feel pretty good considering. I am a little sore. I have been fortunate to not have the naseua yet like some. I honestly have to say so far the biggest thorn in my side is this stupid drain! It drives me bat ass crazy. I wish I could just have it taken out right now haha. Other than that. Not bad. And take this from someone who has never had surgery before or had kids. Good luck to you...you'll be fine.

I've had a c section because my big baby (9 lbs 4 oz) was stuck (feet in ribs) and they had to keep cutting. My scar is 14" long.

I've had gallbladder surgery

I have pins, plates & screws in my left ankle

I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed (I was out, iv and all)

And this was by far the easiest surgery I've had. The worst part for me was the nausea. The liquid lortab made me throw up so I had no pain meds after I left Hospital that night. (I did out patient)

I had trouble drinking because of the nausea but the pain was minimal. And I am a big baby!! I do not deal with pain well at all.

It's not bad. My tummy was sore & bruised but I wasn't in pain. A twinge here & there and my belly button was sore but on a scale of 1-10 I'm honestly saying a 3.

I suffer from RA, fibro, Sjögren's syndrome and osteoarthritis and those pains are far worse than this surgery pain.

Ok...surgeon told me he'd put a tube in where the staples are. That's things coming out after the fact?? :S

Ok so you've had gallbladder removed and this surgery was easier? That's good to hear! When mine was removed it was a horrible feeling after...like someone sliced and diced in there!

I'm 9 days out and the experience was not bad. I did not have any gas pain. I had staples and a drain. The drain was sore but mine was pulled the next morning. My biggest problem was inflammation which made it hard to swallow anything. This only lasted about 3 days. I had my staples pulled yesterday and zero pain...I was freaking over that more than anything. As of today, I have zero pain unless I bend over wrong. I can now swallow a full drink without any pain and I have had no nausea at all. Everyone's experience is so different. You will do fine! !

I don't think everyone does. I had mine pulled before I went home and it didn't hurt.

Lol I had 13 staples in my 6 incisions.... there was no pain at all with them. They just ease them out. It was less painful than stitches.

Yuck, having stitches pulled is just... ewwww. I absolutely preferred staples in previous surgery experiences.

Not looking forward to the whole idea of a drain. I guess I should ask if I will have one *adds yet another thing to her list of questions still to be answered*

When I had my band (I'm having revision surgery) the stitches just dissolved. Is this not the case with sleeve? X

No... 2 weeks post op and I did not get drained or staples.. I think it depends on how the surgeon works... I would ask him about any drain or staples....

I had a drain that I had to go home with because I bled a lot during surgery. I had to drain and record the amount of Fluid twice a day. It was in there for about 10 days. The drain was really uncomfortable and the pain from it was similar to the gas pain you get right after surgery as the gas is trying to wear off. I felt like I couldn't take a full breath in until after it had been removed. It hurt my left shoulder to breath. I think I was also more uncomfortable because they took my gall bladder at the same time. Overall I think it was pretty mild. Definitely not as bad as childbirth and completely worth it. I'm now 18 days out and feeling pretty good. A little fatigue and a little heartburn but my inscision sights are almost healed. No hunger pains but I really miss chugging ice Water. Lol For me making sure my sips of liquid have been small enough has been the most difficult challenge so far. Good luck with your journey!!

I had my gallbladder out too and this was much easier. I even had a hernia I didn't know about repaired. Just make sure u walk n ask for a mouth sponge. U can dip in Water to moisten your mouth:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
