Did You Make a Wig?

Recommended Posts

I saved a long (15") ponytail from my last haircut and should be able to get another before surgery. Did you make a wig out of your hair in anticipation of Hair loss? What is the best way? Or is it even worth the trouble?

donate that hair to "locks of love". You would be better just dealing with the thinning hair for awhile. It should only be temporary. Mine was. keep from using chemicals, perms do not make it look fuller.

I went to sportsclips, and got a seasoned hairstylist used to cutting men's hair (short & thinning - get it? lol).

It worked. It is now thick enough to grow out, but I have grown fond of spiking it up, lol.

If mine thins a lot, I'm thinking of getting it African-style braided. Either that, or starting to wear a headscarf - there are so many beautiful fabrics out there and I can knit too. :)

I'm 4 months out and the Hair loss for me has started. My hair was already in bad condition thanks to too much bleaching over the past few years so it already has a ton on split ends. I just chopped it all off yesterday. It's like right above my shoulders, just got tired of all the shedding and split ends so I said screw or! Sure hope it comes back and hopefully it will come back healthier. Thinking of getting some extentions. I second donating your hair to locks for love. My hair was in no condition to be donated lol. If you want to get a wig later on may be something to look in to but making it from your own hair would be a big hassle.

All the hair on your head falls ? Or just gets thinner ?

Not all but most people lose some. I mostly lose when I'm in the shower or when brushing, but it's not like most people can notice I'm losing. I have some thin spots more then others but hide them with how I part my hair. You won't go totally bald lol

Actually if you google about locks of love they have quite a racket going of # of usable ponytails in vs pony tails sold to offset costs vs #of wigs distributed to needy.

I donated 12 inches to the Pantene beautiful lengths program which is their pro-bono wig program that they pay for the wigs to be made.

You could if your hair isn't up to their requirements have your hair made into extensions. That you can have attached when your hair thins.

I'd check with some of the african american salons as they have more experience & much better prices for that kind of thing. Also, in my state getting braids & weaves doesn't require a license so the cost is much much lower if you go to a braider type person & not a regular stylist.

Does or has anyone used Biotin? Just wondering if it helps with thinning? My hair is already thin, really can not afford to lose anymore! I am just over 2weeks post op.

I am a little over 8 months post-op, and my hair is still majorly falling out. I still have handfuls when I brush and wash it, and daily i have loose hair that I'm picking off my shirts. I went to a board certified dermatologist bc even my nurse practitioner was concerned about the amount I'm still losing. She told me that some ppl do experience this extreme loss like I have after surgery. I've lost almost 80 pounds, so I'm thrilled with this. I just miss my hair. I take all my Vitamins and even taking a prescription now that my dermatologist has put me on....and it's still coming out handfuls a day. I hope it stops soon, or I'll have no choice but to wear wigs.

If you get extensions just make sure they are the clip on kind and not the kind that are weaved into your hair. Since your hair is falling out the extensions will just fall out with it. I'm 6 months out and still losing lots of hair. I take lots of Biotin and take all my Vitamins, too. The problem is the Protein intake. It needs to be consistent. I'm not getting enough, of course. But even if you are it might not save you from lots of shedding. Mine comes out evenly, not in Patches or anything. No one can really tell but me. I had to cut it short (from my butt!) And get layers. It looks so good now but I miss long hair. The weight loss is great though so I don't mind!

My stylist told me you can buy hair Protein at Sallys, but I haven't checked it out yet. I usually high light my hair but I'm scared to do anything that harmful so I guess I'm going to be natural for a change...lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
