So. My beautiful fiancé bought be this:

It's pink and it's got TWO handles and it doesn't drip! I love it! Jk :) Well, I do enjoy it.

Anywho, is drinking out of one of these like drinking out of a straw? I can't tell!! Thanks :)

Sippy cups are actually RECOMMENDED by my surgeon. They're great; I've been using them.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, why would they recommend something like this?

Haha it is a little strange, I know! Sippy cups are good because they accommodate smaller portion sizes (imagine filling up even a tiny Water bottle... You'd only be able to get 2 oz in, and then the rest of your drink gets warm and gross. If you split 8oz into 3 sippy cups and refrigerate the two you don't eat, you've just prepared your meals for a day!

But that's not the main reason. Sippy cups are really good at only allowing you to drink a tiny bit at a time. It helps prevent you accidentally gulping or taking too big of a sip.

That's really been why I love it so much. For some reason, it hurts my belly a lot less that drinking straight out of a cup.

Ugh. Darn these doctors and their completely differing view points!!!!

Yes it's like a straw' date=' because the process to used to withdraw the Fluid is a sucking motion. However the cup is cute.[/quote']

But...... If its like a straw, my MD says NO straws because you are sucking air in as well????

If it's like drinking thru a straw effect, then I don't know if it's good? Who knows? I'm just saying that because my Bari nurse said not to drink out of a straw because it allows air to get into your tummy & they want you to reserve all that room for liquids.

I like the idea of portioning your liquid meals for the day in those to keep them cold in 3 separate sippy cups!

Exactly! Which is why I wanna know lol. It doesn't feel like I'm getting air in. I may have to ask my doc at my appt tomorrow. I thought that they made sippy cups to avoid the air for the purpose of protecting a little one from painful gas. That was my fiances thought when he bought it. Hmm.

My surgeon says no straws either, but he still tells us to use sippy cups. And yes, it doesn't make sense to me either. Those crazy doctors!

I wonder if it has to do with the benefits of the sippy cup outweighing the fact that you suck in a but of air each time. You definitely don't suck in as much air as you would with a straw, so maybe that's why surgeons are ok with it.

Hi all. I'm a speech language pathologist and work a great deal with swallowing disorders. Sippy cups can cause a lot of air pressure issues mostly because of the valve. If you throw those out, you might do better. The valve stops spillage, so you'll have to be careful. Haha.

Oh wow ok I can see how any air is lessened without the valve. I'll still ask my doc, but I'll definately experiment with this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
