If not for a straw I'd never gotten Water in.... Everyone us different and i dont get air when I drink through a straw and if i get a little burping isn't an issue for me... Too Damned many rules that don't really apply to everyone. Some people have issues so it's a rule for everyone... No where does it say don't sucks... Just that straws are to be avoided..so is gum and I chew it daily

My doc said no straws because there is a risk of drinking too much at one time. Nothing about air or stretching the sleeve. Because you can swallow air even without a straw.

Well I tried without a straw and was taking gulps of Water. I talked to them and they are fine with me drinking from a straw as long as I watch how big of a drink I take.

Every surgeon and every sleever are different. What works for one might not work for another. I think if its helping get in fluids, not gulping, not hurting, and the person uses it, then why not?

And a cute pink sippy cup is really not the worst thing someone can do post op. :-)

Three weeks out and would LOVE to try a cool ranch Doritos locos taco. Mmmmmm

But instead, I'll steam some fish. LoL!!!!

Hi all. I'm a speech language pathologist and work a great deal with swallowing disorders. Sippy cups can cause a lot of air pressure issues mostly because of the valve. If you throw those out' date=' you might do better. The valve stops spillage, so you'll have to be careful. Haha.[/quote']

Genius idea!

I was thinking of heating up four or five black Beans to add to my fish.

Getting gourmet up in here!!

The OP said is the sippy cup like a straw? My response is "Yes it's like a straw". I too was told by my MD to not use staws, because of the possibility of getting air into my stomach or taking too much liquid in. Just clarifying my response.

I love it for that, too. It lets me do my cozy 1/4 oz sips. I hope I can keep it!

Yep, it didn't leak. I could only take small sips at a time

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
