My Top 5 "No No" Foods @ 1 Month Post Op

Recommended Posts

My 1 month surgiversary is tomorrow. Although I have been able to eat a wider variety of foods over the past couple of weeks, the following foods are still impossible for me to eat. Let this be a warning to our recently new sleeved members.

1. eggs. Doesn't matter how they are cooked. Very hard to eat.

2. Potatoes. In any form.

3. meats. Including meats in Soups and stews.

4. bread. In any form, though I have been able to add crackers to Soup.

5. Raw Veggy's. Not yet.

If you are near the same stage as I, what good and bad experiences are you going through?

I'm 25 days post op and I had soft scrambled eggs once, I chewed until it was mush, I had about 4 bites but they sat heavy for hours. I've had chicken salad a couple times but its not my favorite, the chicken is hard to eat even when shredded.

I have not tried bread or crackers yet.

I made home made beef stew for my family last week & I mashed up a chunk of potato & carrot and blended with gravy really well and I ate that.

I can handle refried Beans ok and I've had chicken broth... My doctor put me on 2 more weeks of soft mushy foods because my stomach is inflamed. (I threw up everything for over a week) He took me off Prevacid and put me on Pepcid and told me to take either mylanta or pepto before meals. It has helped and I'm even able to drink more liquids now that my tummy is being coated.

I'm sticking to my doctors diet and I haven't cheated at all. I'm not eating anything that isn't on my list. In 25 days I've lost 35 lbs. I keep sipping Water all day.

I'm able to eat scrambled eggs ( takes a while to eat just 1), Soups with soft veggies in them, crackers with some soft cheese ( only 2 at a time), mashed potatoes if I only take a couple bites, and other soft foods of this nature. Things that have been disagreeable - 1/2 cup of soft serve ice cream made me feel ill, some Tomato basil Soup from Jason's Deli was too rich and I had to stop after 2 bites, and I find that I don't have a taste for mac and cheese. I'm 13 days out and can't eat very much which is good because that was the point of the surgery. The disagreeable things give a very clear signal to quit eating them immediately. So I quit. I haven't thrown up once since surgery and plan on keeping it that way.

None of the above. However' date=' when I try to eat any of the foods I previously mentioned, I get the sensation that the food gets stuck in my throat. I can almost feel it go down, much in the same way a snake looks after eating a mouse!

Since these foods are so hard to eat now, I wonder how does our body acclimate to them. I am enjoying my weight loss, but don't want to eat mush foods for the rest of my life.[/quote']

Curious... How big are your bites with the foods you can't tolerate and how well are you chewing? That list seems long! And filled with hints that I've heard most can tolerate. I'm sorry you're not able!!!

Re: Those foods on my list...I chew them until there's nothing left, They all hurt to swallow. It gets so severe, I literally have to stand up to allow the food to go down.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
