protein bar or shake at night?

Recommended Posts

For the last meal of the day would you take a shake or a low carb Protein Bar? I have nu go bars which are 20 g Protein and 20 g carb (not from sugar, but from Fiber and sugar alcohols). I have been taking shakes before bed for several months now and want to try the bar if it is not going to mess with weight gain. What do you think?

I'm no expert.. But I always go for the shake at the end of the day if I need it, just because there is more "crap" in the bars...

I sometimes take a snake before bed...oh wait, nevermind!

Seriously though, I tend to gravitate towards the liquid just because I "feel" like it will be easier to digest.

I'd probably do bar or half a bar over the shake so I didn't have to drain my sna...oh! I'm a girl...go pee in the night :-p

Oh and damn fiddle you got me thinking about the bars so I ate one!! (it was good and my calories where in the 500's for the day)

But it's sitting heavy now.. So I did your experiment for you.... SNAKES YES! BARS NO!

Lmao! I love your quirkiness (laugh a lot when reading your tongue in cheek responses to posts). I wonder if I am ever going to live this snake mishap down as it has so many innuendos behind it that are begging to be exploited beyond what has already been done in this thread! :)

I do a pure Protein bar once in a while when I'm craving something sweet. I eat half slowly and it seems to cure my sweet tooth plus get the added bonus of protein:)

I would also recommend a casein Protein powder... its a slow digesting protein that keeps you in a anabolic state while your sleeping.< /p>

Thanks for your feedback everyone.

I think I will go with long extending Protein shake for bed time and bar for my afternoon snack. The brand of extended Protein I use is Syntax Matrix.

Morning snack is either energy squares and recovery shake before and after run 3 days a week or eggs/turkey sausage on non running days.

Morning Breakfast (6am) is usually a Protein Shake and green veggie drink following an early morning dash on my treadmill.

I try and do a vigorous 1 mile hill run full out (7 mph) every morning at 5:30am when I wake on an empty stomach to wake me up before work. It leaves me with sweat pouring off my face, but really helps. This is like a quick jolt to start my day out right irregardless if it is a running day or not.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
