Are most Sleevers Women? If so Why?

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about doing the VSG for a while after finally deciding against lap-band. This forum has answered alot of my questions just from reading others posts. But one thing I keep seeing is that the vast majority of Sleevers seem to be Women.

Now I don't know why, but maybe women just contribute more here on the forum or something. But I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to why women are doing THIS WLS more as compared to men. Men typically consume and need to consume more calories than women with all things being equal. Do you think this is part of the reason? I am concerned that eating 2-4oz only at each meal will not be enough for me. I used to be a weightlifter and while Ive always been Heavy Ive always been strong and have alot of muscle mass. Will i be able to eat enough to maintain muscle and loose weight. I dont want to be 350 anymore but i honestly dont want to be a lil guy at 180 either. Thoughts?

I'm a male, a tad over 6ft and 355 lbs and overweight all my life.

I think it tends to be more woman cus we like to talk more, lol and woman have a harder time losing in general then men, men for the most part just start working out and they can drop 20lbs but for woman we hold fat more cus our bodys need some fat for babys so when we start trying to lose the body say hell no, lol so it takes alot more time and work for us just to drop 5lbs,

as far as your questions about getting enough in for your muscle think thats something you need to talk to your dr about

I personally think that woman, as with most things, have bigger mouths on this site ;) A sleeve is not gender specific. I chose it personally because of the success rate without malabsorption. I was not willin to sacrifice my hair for my body.

Great replies! Thank you both. I think the fact is, you said it not me :), that women do TALK more and may just be more active of forums about the procedure.

I would like to know stats though. Like % of men and women that do VSG.

I have no clue how to tell you stats, but why do you want to know that? Do you want the surgery? If so do it only cause its what you want to do, its a complete life style change and its not easy you have to change your old bad habits, and mind set.

Well I think I want the surgery, although im not 100% sure yet. I meet with my surgeon in a week and a half to discuss it further. I'm still in the beginning of this. But I know i need to something. Of all the WLS's, VSG seems to be the best one for me. I dont think there is anything wrong with wondering why this may be a female dominated surgey if i am thinking about doing it. Maybe there is a reason. Maybe not. I just know that once you do it, you can undo it. :) Like I said before this forum has been so infomative and I've had dozens of questions and I have found all of the answers here but this one. Thats all...

To be totally honest, you will loose muscle mass in the beginning as everyone does because you can eat so little, but further out, you will be able to eat much more and there are numerous guys here that lift weights and do marathons too.... :)

That makes sense, I was just wondering, I think there are more guys that have it done then we know, I think its just most of them dont really talk about it not as vocal as us woman are, lol and just to confrim what you said, you can not undo the sleeve,

well good luck on what ever you decide to do, this forum is great and everyone is always here to help if they can

I've just started my journey but I myself am leaning towards the sleeve because it isn't as difficult a surgery as the roux en y. Call me crazy but I'm not interested in putting a foreign object into my body as with the band, I'm also not extremely wild about having my intestines rerouted like they do with the roux en y. And yes we women do tend to talk and vent more than men ;)

yes thats the way I was plus w/the sleeve the malabsorbtion (how ever you spell that) is not there, I truley think the sleeve is the best one out there

Great reply! Thank You, exactly what i was thinking. I dont ming loosing muscle mass as long as i can consume enough Protein to get it back! The first thing my wife said about me doign this was, I've always liked you being a big guy, you aren't going to be a bean pole will you? This coming from a skinny person lol.

I've seen and chatted with a lot of men on here. I think everyone's right though....women just talk more. :)

I think it is cultural. More women get cosmetic surgery too. Women, I think, have a bigger burden when it comes to being obese in terms of how were perceived and treated. Also, as others have stated, women are more likely to find social outlets to discuss things.

The question really is if you want surgery or not.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
