Sorry to double post in the same folder, this just seemed the best place to ask this. I have been researching the sleeve for some time now but just tonight I stumbled across something that says the sleeve can cause or worsen reflux and RNY is recommended for patients with reflux and I did a search specific to this and that seems to be the majority opinion.

I have had some sort of reflux since I was 16. I had my gallbladder removed and developed bile reflux gastritis and now as an adult I also have acid reflux as well, sometimes so bad my throat swells and my tongue feels like I ate razor blades. I don't think I could handle worse esp if it can't be controlled with meds which many ppl on other forums I read said was there situation. I have never even considered RNY because the malabsorption scares me both for my own health and future children as we are not done but my current health would make pregnancy dangerous for us both. I know many have normal pregnancies post RNY but I already have malabsorption issues due to IBS and have already lost a child because of this.

Bottom line, have any of you heard this from your docs and pushed forward anyway? Do any pot-op'ers have reflux now, or worse reflux? I feel like the rug was just yanked from beneath me :( Any input would be MUCH appreciated. TIA!

I had a small hernia and it was repaired during the sleeve sugery. My Surgeon did mention that it might not get better. I can tell you at 3 weeks out I am experiencing some issues, but it is probably due to the lemon powder I put in my Soups. I was told just to take my Nexxium twice a day.

However, right after I made the call, I pushed more fluids and more Soup and I haven't had any issues thus far today. So it may depend on the patient??

Do you know if you have a hiatal hernia?

Dr said my minor reflux could get worse. With you being so bad I would be asking the same thing.....

I don't know about a hernia, but honestly it wouldn't surprise me. I have not yet been for testing, I am back to square 1 after putting the surgery off for a year due to issues in my personal life. I don't even have coverage yet but believe I will very soon.

I have severe GERD. Both my pcp and surgeon have told me that 90% of patients with reflux have it resolved after the sleeve, but that there is a 5% chance it'll get worse and a 5% chance that it'll get better but not completely go away. I figure a 95% chance of improvement is better than nothing at all, especially if the GERD is caused from being overweight to begin with.

I had severe reflux and a large hernia, prior to being sleeved. My reflux was so bad that if I ate less than four hours before going to bed, I would wake up chocking on my own vomit. Since surgery, Nothing, Nada, Zilch!! I also had my hernia repaired during surgery, couldn't be happier.

I just had my sleeve yesterday, when they woke me up the first thing I said was my chest, then I went to grab my chest. I have mild reflux but when I woke up from anesthesia, my reflux was so severe that I swore I was having a heart attack, they put me in ICU to watch over me, they just put me in a regular room now, but I still feel the pain but not as bad. Reflux is no joke after surgery. I barely feel the pain from the surgery.

Thank you all for your input. 95% chance of it going away or getting better sounds really good.... but I guess its something I will have to discuss with a surgeon because even if my acid reflux is weight related, I still have to contend with the bile reflux caused by having my gallbladder removed. In the meantime I guess I should get acquainted with the RNY. :/

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
