Child's reaction to surgery

Recommended Posts

In preparation for my surgery next month I told both my 16 yr old son and my 10 yr old daughter. I was very positive about it and at the time they both seemed to take the news well. I only revealed the good like how moms going to be healthier. Now my daughter is having a hard time with it. I'm going to MX for 5 days to have the surgery there so she is apprehensive about that as well. I've had many talks with her but now I am feeling so guilty for making her uneasy and insecure. Did I make the wrong decision in telling her? I wanted to give them time to process it before I left. Has anyone else had these kinds of issues with telling children?

I chose not to tell my kids for that very reason. Actually what happened was when I started the process they knew about it. But I could sense their anxiety over it. So I lied. I told them I wasnt gonna have it after all. 4 months later--- me and my husband went on a "parent only" vacation. When I came home- they were in school every day and I just had to hide original discomfort and my shakes from them. My husband was very helpful at keeping them occcupied. It was awesome. They still don't know and I plan to keep it that way. Afterall- it is my business.

I have a 16 year girl and my son was 10.. My husband and I told them together. They were a little scared about it at first but I listened to their worries and answered all the things they were curious about until they were good with the idea..

I did not leave the country so I can only think that perhaps telling her its a common practice for Americans to go there for surgery??

My Childs 15 &13 said I didnt need the surgery but I told them that I wasnt happy and how when they didnt like a outfit or shoes they wouldn't wear them well I didnt like my outfit and they understand or maybe excepted what was going to be.

My youngest is 27 and also told me I didn't need it and then threw a fit. I told him to deal with it! LOL.. I really didn't say that, but he knew I would do it anyway, but had to toss his 2 cents in just for good measure.

Sometimes you just have to do what you have to be use you know our kids best. Some can be told and some need a sugar coating

I have an 8 year old and my husband and I both decided to sit down with him and explain the process and that Mommy would get better and not have to give herself shots anymore (insulin). He was a bit nervous on the day of but when Dad took him to see me and I made a pretty face for him he was better. I came home from the hospital a couple days later and he helped take care of me. He made sure our little dog didn't jump up on me, he was such a good doctor!

I was lucky I didn't have to go to Mexico because Kaiser covered the sleeve.

I have a 5 yr old daughter and a 10 yr old son with autism. I told them both about the surgery. My daughter didn't like the idea at first because she said she liked hugging my big belly, but I just told her that by losing my big belly she would get to keep me for longer, that seemed to work really well for her.
