1mo Surgiversary Tomorrow

Recommended Posts

tomorrow makes 1 month since surgery..

i've learned a ton about myself and my body in the process. i'm surprised with how good i feel, how i'm losing weight, the correlations i see between my daily activities and the scale, and the mental aspects.

how good i feel

i feel great. recovery wasn't nearly as bad as i thought it would be. i have no idea why/how i got lucky, but things were pretty easy. i know it's not always the case, but i had surgery on a wednesday and went back to work the following monday. i was a little tired and run down, but altogether it was smooth sailing.

i've been working out again, but not to the level i want. saturday i am cleared to begin weights and jiu jitsu again, and i can't wait to get back to it. it will be difficult to get back in the swing of things, but i am ready for it. previously i was training jiu jitsu 4 days / week and lifting 2 days / week. i'm ready to get back but realize i can't come out of the gate overdoing it.

weight loss

i'm down 30. i hit my stall, took a break from the scale, and when i noticed my pants fitting better i stepped back on. i hope to get 3-4lb/week until goal, setting me up for an anticipated goal date of sometime in september. i know i'll get there, maybe even faster when i'm back on the mat for those crazy intense jiu jitsu sessions. life is good.

correlations

it's amazing how the scale fluctuates between good days and bad days. yes, i said it - bad days. some days i don't do well on the food. i eat too little or eat something that's not on my plan. and you know what? it's ok. i'm very good at logging food, and the devil is in the details. im starting to develop the mindset that each food choice i make has a direct effect on my goals, and it's helping me conquer my demons.

mental aspects

as i said, it's been easier than expected. at least in the physical sense. the mental aspect is another story. i have opted to continue care with my pre-op psych to make sure i stay motivated and on the right path. there are days when i have some buyer's remorse, but that's becoming more and more rare. going out with family and friends is hard, but i'm learning ways around it. and PS for all you self conscious folks out there - if you don't make a big deal out of it or look like someone just killed your dog then NOBODY will ask why you're eating so little. they aren't paying attention. i promise.

all in all this was a great decision and a great tool to help me achieve my goals. i already feel better and am ready for more. can't wait to see what the next 6 months bring!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
