Can't Eat! Three weeks post op

Recommended Posts

I can't manage to eat everything I need to. My suggested pureed diet plan says that I should eat 1/2 cup of oatmeal in the morning. I can only eat a quarter of that and sometimes it tries to come back up. No matter how slow I am eating. Just eating a quarter of it is taking an hour! AND I am using a baby spoon to make sure my bites are small. This morning I was able to eat maybe a 1/4 cup of yogurt and now I am full and don't want to eat my pureed fish. Is there ANY way I can skip this and start my soft diet on Saturday like I am supposed to?

From what my NUT told me, whatever you are eating don't eat it for longer than 15 minutes otherwise you're into grazing and you don't want to do that. I think you may not be hungry because you are taking so long to consume what you're having for your meals. It takes time to have your tummy heal - eat what you can and make sure you're getting your Proteins in, along with your Water. You'll make it. :)

I don't know what you mean by can you stop this? But my nutritionist also told me that after 20 minutes if I'm not done eating, to stop. Sounds like a good thing that you aren't that hungry right? just make sure your getting in all your Proteins and fluids...

It might just be too dense for you still. You are still healing and you need time to adjust. It does get much easier to eat as you get further along. oatmeal is pretty heavy, how thick are you making it? Maybe thin it out a bit. My NUT didn't want me taking more than 20 minutes either, and told me not to stress as long as I was progressing on my stages, even if it was slowly. I eat every 3 to 4 hours, 3 meals two healthy Snacks. I'm three months out and still never hungry, I'm enjoying that for every minute it lasts!

Stay hydrated. Good luck!!

Funny... Because in was told to take at least 30 mins eating each meal

Not everyone is going to progress at the same rate. Eat what you can. since you are having trouble, focus on your protiens first.

Spinach in cans, pureed with a little lemon is a good alternative to the grains and meats, if you aren't tolerateing them well.

If you can do nothing else, find a good raw juice bar (not smoothie hut or java whatever) and get some juices.

Good luck!

Lexy, I find that I can get tuna fish down with no problems... I can't do the shakes or the Isopure drinks....But one of the NUTS at my doctors office told me I would bust a staple eating before I should. Does that mean I can't eat till my body is ready or I can eat after a certain time of healing like next Saturday that is my 31 days out?

Oatmeal tends to expand in your stomach. Try switching to something like grits or farina. I think you'll do a lot better.

Be super careful with tuna... You CANNOT eat that daily... Too much mercury! About two times a week max

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
