lexnurse 26 Posted March 19, 2013 More risk for blood clots, and other complications because you don't heal as well or as quickly as a non smoker 1 taurabird reacted to this
IWannaBeHealthy 2 Posted March 19, 2013 I am not a smoker but... My doctor does a blood test for nicotine and if it is in your system, the surgery is cancelled... Janna

Momonanomo 534 Posted March 19, 2013 not to wear out the soapbox, but you've just gotta become a non smoker before surgery. It is not easy, I smoked for 25 years and stopped 8 wks ago. But I've decided to have this drastic surgery to remove 85% of a major organ so that I can have a chance at a healthy life. I just couldn't reconcile the thought of not giving myself the best possible chance at a successful recovery. If you are considering this surgery, you should quit, and the sooner before surgery the better. You can do it! I promise!

MrsG 329 Posted March 19, 2013 Some dr s will cancel surgery if you don't quit. Mine did a nicotine test beforehand. I smoked for 15 yrs, quit last August and had surgery in January. Also I was told healing is harder and longer if you are a smoker. Find out what your surgeon wants. I've read on here that some ppl were never required to quit. I know my body thanks me now for quitting! I don't regret it. Good luck!
