deedeemuffin 346 Posted March 18, 2013 Yesterday I found out that I can run....well a little way at least. I still have another 9 days until my 4 month surgiversary so, hopefully I will be posting some better weight stats by then. At my last weigh in I was down 68 lbs. I know some people consider that slow, but it is fine with me. It averages to over 4.5 lbs. a week. I have a lot more weight to get rid of, but it amazes me every day how things are changing. Today I needed more fire wood for the wood stove. (I live in an apartment on a farm in NY & it's a little cold with more snow coming tonight). I didn't want to bother my land lord for it so, I decided to get it myself. I have NEVER done this! I ended up having to go all the way to the horse barn to get a wheel barrow. Then to the wood shed. I actually had to climb into the wood shed & throw logs out the door into the wheel barrow. Then wheeled the wood all the way to the apartment, unloaded & stacked the wood & then got the wheel barrow back to the barn. Phew! My dog was running circles around me the whole time & barking like crazy. I'm pretty sure she thought that I had lost my mind! LOL Later in the morning my mom came to visit. I don't see her very often because she lives about 2 hours away. We went out for a few hours & when we got back to my place I realized that I had forgotten to give her a gift that I had been holding on to. She had to leave in 2 minutes to get home in time for when her foster child gets off the bus. So, I RAN! It is definitely a bit of a hike from where you can park & where our apartment is on the property. I ran all the way down to the house, grabbed the gift & ran all the way back up the hill to my mom's car. Now, it's not like I did a 5K or anything, but I didn't know that I could run again at all! Almost 4 months ago I would be freezing right now instead of building a fire. There is no way I could have done all that walking, carrying, climbing, etc. at over 400 lbs. I'm not even tired right now after what was a pretty long day & far from over. There is still cooking and cleaning and home work to do. (Yes, I am a 34 year old college student ) I think we sometimes get so obsessed with numbers on the scale that we miss the little or more important things. Keeping track of them & sharing them has been helpful to me. I can't wait for my BF to get home so that I can tell him that I ran today. He'll probably make me go outside & show him...LOL. So, keep the faith my fellow sleevers! Our new tool that we are using to live a healthier life IS working. So, who else is running? If you haven't tried yet, I DARE you! You might be surprised. Butterthebean 8,146 Posted March 18, 2013 Why walk when you can run?
gmanbat 5,889 Posted March 18, 2013 I could not run pre-sleeve, even walking up the stairs to my bedroom had me puffing like I was in the thin air of Mt. Everest. There is a steep uphill grade down the block from me. When I first got in this neighborhood it was tough to walk to the top. Today as part of the High Intensity Interval Training phase of my exercise program I ran full speed up the hill for 30 seconds with 5 pound weights in each hand, walked back down, and did it again...9 times! My daughter ran up with me...every other time without weights. When I get up to 10 times I will increase the weight of the hand weights. Always bump it up....bammm! I am 64 and feel like I'm in my 20's when I do it. The aches and pains that set in later remind me that the tick-tocks have added up.
AudOne 82 Posted March 18, 2013 wow you are all amazing! I managed to drag myself through a half marathon in 2011 walking only, but after I'm sleeved, I hope to run marathons and triathlons. The picture in my head of that finish line keeps me motivated to keep going. Again congrats to you and always Celebrate every victory!
Ballermom 803 Posted March 18, 2013 That's great! I'm looking forward to being able to run maybe by late spring. Congrats to you!
Ms.AntiBand 2,984 Posted March 18, 2013 Can I run? No, but then even when I was 104 lbs I couldn't either. For some reason I'm not built to run. I'm like a gnome.. And have you ever seen a gnome run? Didn't think so.. I rest my case

My Brother In Law just did the Ironman in Arizona in November. If you are shooting for marathons or triathlons you are already an athlete in my book. You obviously have it in you. Go get it! I outweigh you by over 100 lbs. You could start running now! It might not be far, but I am confident that you could start, though!

Pookeyism 1,143 Posted March 18, 2013 I am sufficiently able to avoid zombies, I can say with confidence. Be forewarned, however, the right footware is really important. I learned that the hard way (stress fracture). I am also taking a cue from a friend who was never overweight, but never really ran, who did some damage to her knees. they said with two 10$ knitted knee supports it probably would have never happened. But - DAGGONE! Yay for you. The running is no suprize after the wheelbarrel! lol

Geminidrive 389 Posted March 18, 2013 Congratulations! Although I was on the athletic side, I was never a "runner" just to be running, that was something that I never found enjoyment doing. I have however, rekindled my joy of walking, albeit with my large goofy dog.
