Graduation question

So I have a non sleeve related question.

I've been working full time and going to school. I'm finally almost done, after this semester I will be 8 credit hours shy of graduation requirements. So I will be done at the end of this year. Hallelujah. Anyhow, my college doesn't do mid year graduations, so I would have to wait until may 2014 to walk across the stage.

I've worked so hard to get my degree, but in all honesty I can't see going back six months later to just walk across some stupid stage. Some of my family members keep pushing me to walk the stage, as I will be the first college graduate in the family. However all that symbolism stuff doesn't really mean much to me, I'm just glad to be done.

I was thinking to have a family celebration at the end of the year once I was done. Anyhow, I just wanted to get some opinions on the matter.

I did, I graduated with my BS degree in August (earlier then the students I was attending with) & went back the next May to walk with my friends that I had made during the program. I really didn't want to either, but they all wanted me to...after it was all said & done I was glad I did!

I didn't walk for high school and have regretted it since. I am the same as you, finish mid year, no mid year graduation and have to drive 4 hours for graduation (we are a satellite school based 4 hrs away from the main campus and they only do main campus graduations) I absolutely 100% will walk. I have worked far too hard to not sit thru a long winded ceremony where I turn my tassel and leave :-) I say do it, you have earned it!

I didn't walk at my nursing school graduation, my bachelors or my masters. I didn't go because of kids, childcare, etc., and I really regret it! Im getting another masters in fall of 2014 and will walk FINALLY May 2015. (and will have to fly back for it)

My first degree I didn't walk and didn't think too much about it. The second one though, I did because I wanted my kids to see their old man graduate. I'm currently working on a 3rd degree, but this time I don't know if I will walk or not. I am leaning towards it but I have a year left so I don't know at this time. Do what makes you feel the best. To me it was a culmination of a lot of hard work, and I wanted to be with the friends that I made and for my kids.

I've been through this with my son. I grew in a family of 7 kids, I am the youngest. College was never on the table for us. We were expected to graduate high school, get a job and move out.

My son was the first one on my side of the family to graduate from college out of 15 grandkids. From the first day he went, I was so excited that I would see him walk across the stage with a degree from a top tier college. I could hardly wait! Imagine my surprise when in general conversation while moving him in for his senior year he says he is not walking. Say what? His dad and I paid for that degree (something we are proud we could do) and by golly he was walking if I had to drag him across the stage kicking screaming! I think his dad had a talk with him about sometimes you just have to suck it up for mom.

Anyway, he did walk and he was glad because he was proud.

Few years later...same kid about to graduate from a top tier law school. I get, so mom, you didn't pay for this degree so you can't make me walk. Say what again? Do you really want to go there again? Really? We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Either is fine by me. Sheesh...you would think after 27 years he would have learned this. (He gets that from his dad.)

Long story short: He walked. He was glad he did. Yes, I played the mom card. I use it when I am left with no other choice, but it is something I have used less then 3 times as my children have grown up. Helped also that law school graduation was Mother's day weekend.

Moral of the story is: Your hard work is a source of pride to your family and they love you very much. Their heart will be bursting with love and pride for you during your graduation. Do it for them. I promise you won't be sorry.

Don't know if you still have your mom, but if you do, please don't make her play the mom card.

Tell em' if you walk acreoss stage, you get gifts! Some one else covers your robe and hat, too!!!!

I agree with newat52 said...it's for the others too...the ones that have supported you through the process! When I got my ADN, I walked for my family because I was the only college graduate! With my BSN & MSN it was in support of my fellow classmates! Now...my girls do tell me if/when I finish my PhD they refuse to go to yet another of my graduations...but we will see!! Lol :-P

I agree.. This a a very proud moment for your family. I did do the graduation thing when I received my BA, nd id a memorable extended family gathering? I didn't with my Masters or PhD... Once was plenty.
