Can't decide. ..help!

Hello everyone! Im new to the site and I have some questions for ya...I am having a hard time deciding between the sleeve and the bypass. I am diabetic with a bmi of 35. I would like to lose 80 lbs and be done with the diabetes. I am leaning towards the sleeve but I have two concerns...I won't lose enough weight and I won't completely get rid of the diabetes. There are so many pros and cons to each and I'm just confusing myself by obsessing over the research. Anyone out there having or have had the same issue?

I had a BMI of 46 and was diabetic. I had the sleeve and went home the next day off my medications. I have had no problems since surgery at all and I'll be 3 months out on the 19th. Honestly, the sleeve and bypass both have the same end results...but the sleeve doesn't have as many risks as the RNY because nothing is being rerouted, and alot of surgeon's are now preferring the sleeve due to this. but either way, you need to make the best decision for you. Good luck!

Thank you Traci!! I think the fear is going to be there no matter what. I like that the sleeve seems more tolerable but I am seeing a lot of people stalling on their weight loss and/or not losing enough esp if the bmi is on the lower side. Ugh what to do what to do lol

Most surgeons will tell you that weight loss is similar between the two procedures. RNY is still considered "the gold standard" simply because it's been around much longer.

With either surgery, you will likely experience stalls. It's a normal process with any weight loss, surgical or not. Your results will be based on the effort you are willing to put it - as far as choosing between the two surgeries, you just have to decide what you want to live with for the rest of your life. The biggest deciding factor for me, in all honesty, was the fact that with the sleeve, you don't have dumping. After reading the details about that common side effect with RNY, I knew I didn't want to put myself in that situation.

The fear is normal, too. If you didn't worry about having major surgery, then something would be wrong with you! :)

IMO, the RNY is for people who really don't have control over what they eat. As in you NEED that potential for getting sick to keep you on the right track. Not that it's guaranteed that you'll experience dumping, but it's likely, and that can happen at very inconvenient moments, and it could happen at any time after the surgery. It's not a side effect that goes away with time.

Talk over your concerns with your surgeon, and they can help you make the right choice. Good luck!! :)

I chose the sleeve because I did not want to experience dumping or deal with malabsorption issues.

I feel like a "normal" person who just eats really tiny portions of food and is never hungry.

Love my sleeve - it saved my life mentally and physically!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
