So, I met with the surgeon on yesterday and got my date for March 28th. However, before I got the date my family convinced me on waiting till after our family cruise where there will be 30 of us surrounded by food and drinks. So on my mind, I had already decided that if the date was going to be close to us going, which is May 10,

that I would wait till after. Well low and behold when I got that date, which was a cancellation, I was estactic. He assured me that I would just be transitioning to solid foods. I know that if I was going to be successful , I needed to know how to manage my new tummy and Mind to. Be able to function in any environment. So after told my family they freaked....leading me to this thread. For all of you who have been sleeved already, what are the common complications after surgery and how long of a range does the complications last? My family is supportive of the Eating part, they are just concerned of potential complications while cruising in Bermuda? I would love to hear folks thoughts?

That's a good six weeks out.. You will weigh less and you won't over eat! I'd do it and use the cruise as a celebration. You should be well healed and if you stick with eating right with a vengeance you will be fine at that point. You're dr must agree, too?

Of course, it's probably not worth the price youre paying, but if like I said, you're celebrating then it's priceless

I too would be a bit concerned first because the rash of cruise ship problems and certainly would not want to be on one if by chance there is an outbreak of norovirus. Secondly, if there are complications it may be very difficult to get you to a good hospital or possibly back to the US. I would definitely inquire with the cruise line about how they handle medical emergencies.

Wow that's a hard one! I mean I went to Disneyland 6 weeks after surgery and walked all day for three days and rode all the rides and was fine just really tired at the end of each day... I am 47 years old and had no "complications" from surgery... But who can predict such a thing...

A cruise is an opportunity of a life time! They are fun I've gone to the South Pacific on one.. They are relaxing but i also did things like scuba diving. So I would ask what do you have planned?

As I said a cruise can be a trip of a lifetime, but surgery is an opportunity of a lifetime!!

Personally I would let nothing get in the way of my surgery!

Everybody is different. Personally I am 4 mos out and maybe I would go now. At 6 weeks I was dead to the world. I do have two autoimmune diseases that probably made a impact on my healing. But, I agree with Laura-Ven and don't let anything get in your way of that surgery! Good luck!

A couple things come to mind... if you are swimming, especially in the ocean, you might want to ask your dr. if your incisions will be healed enough for that. Also, as you will be taking more liquids in than probably ever before, you might want to think about "clean/safe" sources of Water whilst away... I would say that to anyone travelling to a tropical place, but even more so for someone fairly post-op.

As for the encouraging side of things, a cruise ship with cater to YOU so it doesn't mean you HAVE to do buffets all day/night. Instead, order a la carte and ask for something super yummy as your protein... what an opportunity to have specially prepared filet mignon or fish or baked chicken every day!

Good luck in whatever you decide and wishing you "smooth sailing" in EVERY way! lol!

Now for the doom and gloom, sorry. I did have complications and am now at 7 weeks. It was a rough recovery and I still have problems with food. Remember, you can only eat 1/4 cup of food while everyone else is in food heaven.

That being said, you make your own decision. I have a cruise coming up and am enjoying looking for smaller size cloths.

I have a lot of excess skin and won't be a model but I enjoy the new energy I have now.

Good luck, I know this will be a hard decision.

I'm about three months out and had many complications after surgery which required weeks of hospitalization.

At six weeks my vomiting and nausea was at it's peak. I couldn't imagine being anywhere other than my bed during that time.

But again I'm in the lower 10% of people that have complications - doesn't mean you will. You should discuss with your surgeon just to be safe.

Whatever you decide - I hope you have an amazing time. :-)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
