Hey I have a few questions of my fellow June buddies....does your dietician talk about the 5-10-15 rule for Protein shakes? IE- per serving: less than 5 grams total fat, less than 10 grams total carbohydrate and 15 grams or more Protein.

I have a few friends that I work with who have had their surgery through the same office as me, however I have a few that have went else where. 1 of my friends suggessted this as what he was told was a cheaper and tastier option for Protein Shakes by the dietician at the office he went too.

He said he mixes- Skim milk, Sugar Free chocolate or strawberry Syrup and powdered milk by the gallon and that is how he got in his Protein daily.

How are you dealing with the scared aspect of it? I'm trying Yoga and meditation at the recommendation of my PCP (she is very "natural" lol) I want to tell her to up my dose of clonopin (which I only take PRN) but I'm not one to even take those often lol

Here is what my dietitian says about protein shakes:

A good protein supplement contains close to 20gm of protein/serving, or more and less than 10 grams of carbohydrates/serving (if a Meal Replacement shake) and less than 4gm of carbohydrates/serving (if a straight protein powder/shake). In addition to looking at the protein and carbohydrate content of your Protein Drink we also encourage you to take a peek at the ingredient label and identify the source of the protein. If the source of the protein is whey, milk protein blend, egg, or soy then you’ve got you a good source of protein; however, whey is by far the best source of protein so stick with that if you can. Without a doubt it is imperative that you stay away from any protein supplements in which the source of the protein is a collagen Protein Blend! Collagen is an incomplete protein and you want to stay away from it.

collagen Protein is in those "New Whey" Protein Shots at walmart.... stay away!! Ha!!

Also as women, too much soy isn't good (I'm sure you've read the articles that it acts as estrogen in the body and may increase one's chances of getting breast cancer). So I definitely stick to the whey!

Ive started this journey 3 years ago, finally my insurance covers the band and bypass but i wanted the sleeve, i started away last july with my Nut, for a six month requirement so i started making changes as I researched, so I could maybe transition à little easier. (I started at 343 weight my highest was 346 and bmi was 50's and many médical problèms)Somewhere alone the way the sleeved got covered on my insurance, so i was super happy. I loss 15 pound by then, and just about all my other insurance and doctors médical requirements prior to surgery where already done due to my so many médical issues and in caré already my heart doctor is who référéd me years back. My surgery date was may 28, and I was down 21 pounds, and off my sugar meds.(pills) and clap level was decreased some. And ready as ever then my date got changed due to conflict with dates, to June 18...i was à little upset for a minute, then realized i just will Lose more weight which is better for me for surgery. Of course i slipped some for mothers day, like i was saying good bye to foods, but back on track soon after and I refused to do the guilt trip to myself anymore, so i just started back on track and I decided to called my Nut to come in again since i had completed my 6 months requirement aready. Turned out i gain 5, which ive losts again, and im sûre à little more. I dont live to weight myself everyday no more either...i go by how my clothes fit and how my joints are feeling from the pressure my Weight puts on them. My décision to take this journey was because i wanted my life back, and im going to get it! I will be 52 in july and what à Hell of à birthday gift to myself for myself. Someone i had forgotten about for years, my needs. Hope this gives some encouragement. ..

My mother just told me while walking through Walmart that I will be depressed because I will miss food....and I shouldnt have the surgery. What an ignorant thing to say....and so uninformed. Why cant she just listen to me when I tell her about what I will be eating....and that one day ill be back to the things I like just in moderation. I dont eat bad now....its just Portion Control. Does anyone else think their mother is jealous of your weight loss or potential weight loss?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
