Exactly how do you feel when...

Can y'all explain to me how you feel when you are full? I know we are not supposed to feel that fullness that I used to go for before banding; you know, where you can't even move after eating.

How do you feel and what is your indicator to stop eating. I want to feel some kind of fullness! Otherwise I would have been able to do this on my own! Hmmm, I think I am not being patient. Still trying to figure this out.

Sometimes it takes more than one fill, and sometimes the fills take a few days, even a week to fully "kick in". I have several "signals". I am one of those, who gets a runny nose (nothing serious, just sniffly) when I am full. No one knows why, it is supposed that it is something related to the slimes if you over eat, something with mucous production. If I continue with another bite or 2 I get the hiccups---loudly, wherever I am at!!! So I try to eat slowly, so I feel the signs before my body TELLS me!! I can't really tell you how it feels, but it is a tightness, like if I take in anymore I am going to have that golfball feeling. If I am eating fast, and feel that, I am best off very quietly spitting the last bite I took out into my napkin, so as to avoid being overly full. Each and every time I have hurt with a PB (which have been VERY few), or more common, close to PB--it is because I have been eating too fast, and missed the signals. I would say I did not get to this point of restriction until my 2nd of my 2 fills. The first one I only felt if I ate WAY too fast or too much. Even then, it took quite a bit.

At that restriction, my Dr. had me eating small bites, chewing thoroughly, and only eating for 20 minutes maximum. Since the 2nd fill, sometimes I eat longer than 20 minutes, but still eat much less, just because of how slowly I eat. My DH always beat me eating before, and still does, even though he eats many, many times what I do!!!

Good Luck---you will reach a good restriction with patience and good habits...sometimes it just takes a little longer. And you will learn to listen and feel for signals your body gives you with time. It isn't a race, and you will get there...have faith!!

OMG, I'm sooooo excited that there is a Doctor doing this surgery in the greater Vancouver area. I have been trying to find a Doctor here for a while and I just happened upon this site today! Can you tell me were your Doctor is located? What is the after care like? Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Katgirl,

For one thing, you have only had one fill. You probably won't feel good restriction for a few fills. Of course everyone is different. I was told to stop eating when I wasn't hungry anymore; to not wait until I was full. This is a great concept, but I haven't been able to do it all the time yet. I haven't had a fill, but I do have some restriction with just the band. I can't eat near what I used to, but I can still eat more than I should be. I hope to get a fill this next week or so and see if that helps any. It probably won't, but that is ok too. I will get there eventually. It will give me time to work on eating slow. I have the hardest time with that. I manage to chew ok, but I want to shovel it in like I always have.

It is such a learning thing. And as you know somedays you can eat a lot more than other days.

I rely on my watch and portion size. For instance I will take a chicken cutlet and cut it in half to make it thin but still the same size width wize. I will take a few veggies and some tye of starch if I have it here. I eat all of the chicken and by the time I am finished with that I usually have taken 20 minutes and I'm no longer hungry. I may have a bite of the veggies and starch but thats about it. BUT if I get hiccups at anytime during the meal I slow way down or stop because a PB will come if I don't.

Everyone is differen't and you really have to listen to your body and relearn.

At first I would get that pressure in my chest. It is unpleasant. It would make me want to go in a room all by myself until it passed. Now my body gives me the "enough!" feeling before I get to that point.

I remember pre band asking for a description of the "too much feeling". I was told you will know because it hurts.

I have to second Jack - I know what hungry and not hungry feels like...my full is a weird sensation under my breastbone...unfortunately, I don't have a good handle on full=done yet - I am a slow learner - I eat that last greedy bite and now know what too full feels like...lol

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
