Please give me your suggestions for what tests one should have to determine if lack of weight loss is hormonal or something- i only know of a thyroid test - what else would be good to have. I'm interested in exploring other possible reasons for only losing 7lbs in a year with the band. I've logged almost a year of food diaries so i have tons of records. i have no insurance or regular doc so money is an issue but at this point what's another couple of thousand dollars - ha - i'm in debt for the next 5 years just for the surgery and fills so i'm not overly concerned with the cost. i just need to find what i need and i can go to a local clinic for the tests. thanks,

The only person who can really help with this is a doctor. If money isn't an issue then you should make an appointment with a doctor to explore the possibilities. There are a million reasons why you could have lost so little. Have you spoken to the doctor that banded you? What does he have to say about such little weight loss?

I have not gotten any answers or responses from my doctor or his staff -and I know longer try with them - that is why I am starting my search for my own answers - i want to be armed with as much info as i can before i go as I don't think docs are the end all be all -

Where are you in relation to your goal weight? Or the lightest you've been in the last 5-10 years? I know a lot of people w/BMI under 35 get banded in Mexico, is that the case with you? If you're already close to where your body wants to be, that might explain some of it.

I never suggested that doctors are the end all to be all.....however they are the only ones qualified to tell you what tests you should take.

Jack gave very good advice, that would be my course of action.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
