Well, obviously, this is a Sleeve board ;) We might be a LITTLE biased ;) One thing I liked about the sleeve over bypass, is sleeve doesn't rearrange your inards. Less down time, and faster recovery. Another thing is taht Sleeve can act as a 'gate-way' surgery. Of course both surgeries are permanent, once you do it, you can't go back. BUT, if you do sleeve and then feel like you didn't acheive all your goals, you can without too much trouble be revised to by pass. With bypass, you cannot revise to anything else, it's the end. Sleeve was developed actually because many patients taht were too big for by pass would get sleeved as a first step and then after they lost a significant amount of weight they would get the rest of the by pass. Most patients found taht they were losing enough with the sleeve alone though, and the surgery was born so to speak and offered as an independent surgery. So my opinion, do the sleeve, and if you're not happy, get revised.

You will find that many are very successful with the sleeve. Since 85% of your stomach is removed it will be very hard to eat significant amounts of food to regain hense success. I agree to go the sleeve route first then convert if you have too. On the other hand if you have a significant amount to lose you may consider the bypass as it is said to be for those with a higher BMI.

Sleeve was the clear choice for me as there are no malabsorption issues.

Agree with all the above posts, but wanted to clarify that you actually can revise a gastric bypass to a duodenal switch, and most patients are successful after revision.

With that said, I would go sleeve too. I watched my Dad's gastric bypass fail as he managed to eat right through it. He was 400lbs, went down to 220 and now is back up to 300-320. He isn't the only one I know either :-/ I actually know about the revision option because of others in his support group that have or are revising after regaining. Not that regain can't happen with other surgeries, but bypass seems to easily stretch and accommodate poor eating habits for weight regain. And that's not even getting into the malabsorption issues, of which he had plenty as well. Overall, the sleeve just seems to be a safer choice. Good luck!!! :)

Sleeve was a clear choice for me. I don't want any bypassing of my nutrients. With the bypass they actually bypass a large portion of your small intestines. The small intestines is where most of your vitamins/nutrients are absorbed by your body before going into the large intestines. With the sleeve it does not interfere with your absorbsion of all the good stuff your body needs....it just restricts the amount you can eat. Good luck with your choice.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
