I'm not much of a drinker but I do enjoy a caramel apple martini every now and then. I'm sure I'll have a drink this coming summer for my bday. I'm only 2 weeks post op so it's not an issue yet.

I am 6 weeks out and I haven't drank anything yet. My doctor said no alcohol for 6 weeks...but I am continuing because of the empty calories! :)

I was sleeved January 30th. No alcohol for me yet. Doc said I could have it 4 months out. I believe VSG patients are supposed to feel the effects because the stomach is so small that the alcohol does not stay in the stomach as long as when it was full sized so it kind of flushes through the stomach and gets absorbed right away.

That is great. I would not encourage others to drink during the losing phase for the reason you mention, even if the doctor clears it. I think drinking in moderation is OK once you are 6 months out. It really depends on your personal goals and expectations in terms of weight loss rate and/or desires.

Thanks! I figure every glass of wine will set me back and I am working so hard for this!

Can we cause any harm to our sleeve? Damage? Stretch? I am thinking if trying a cocktail on vacation next month at 10 weeks post op.

Thoughts?

I believe beer, or anything with carbonation can make the sleeve stretch over time if abused.

I'd just like to add to this to whoever may be wondering.. I think u just have to test the waters yourself. When I was first reading about the sleeve and alcohol everyone had me thinking I was going to be completely wasted on one glass of wine. That may be the case for some but not all. The first time I drank wine I did about 2 glasses and felt pretty buzzed (so yes less did hit me harder but not quite as extreme as some ppl) last night I drank 3 glasses and felt drunk but it was a comfortable drunk not sloppy i wasn't stumbling around or anything.. So just take it slow and try it! I'm going to try liquor next because it has less calories and no carbs and such

Took a sip of wine and my wife's drink with dinner. Felt it burning all the way down. I am not sure when I will try again. Anyone else experience this after tying alcohol?

Yeah after I chugged NyQuil. By the way, true story. I drank NyQuil at week 3 because of a nasty cold and definitely felt the burn from the alcohol as it passed through my system. Kind of a weird feeling considering how little alcohol there is in NyQuil.

Just be careful with cross addiction. It is easy to slip into that rut, I hear, once food can no longer be our "drug of choice".

I was told no alcoholic beverages for at least a year by my doc. They emphasize the fact that your liver is like the housekeeper and needs to filter so much junk out of your blood as you lose, that asking it to metabolize alcohol on top of that could cause serious damage. I've also heard through some other groups that I belong to that people have gotten seriously ill and died just from a couple of drinks after WLS because of the way their new system works. Totally not worth the risk to me. I love a glass of wine (or a mojito, or margarita...) as much as the next person, but I'm not going to chance it for at least a year.

I love this thread! LOL I am 26 so I was concerned about drinking. Not that I drink all the time but I usually go out like once or twice a month. The bars I go to usually get pretty crowded. I went out at like 10 days post op as DD drinking only Water and can I tell you all it was the worstttttt time I ever had!! Being 100% sober in a place packed to the brim with drunk people is theeee worst. So I can't wait til I can have at least one drink to loosen me up a smidgen. LOL and yes, like some others I am secretly hoping to be a cheap date! ;) spending $75 on a night out is just no bueno!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
