3 weeks out & not doing so well...

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery about 3 weeks so & I'm still stuck on liquids. I'm having a hard time keeping liquids down & any meds I take. My problem seems to be, I have a lot of mucous stuck in my throat so I gag on whatever it is I take in. I've had a barium swallow done so it's not coming from my stomach. I'm just so frustrated & feeling very down because it's taking a lot out of me. Has anyone ever had this problem? I've tried different allergy meds & nothing works. Waiting to hear from my surgeon as I write this but I'm not expecting much...

Are you sick? Maybe you have a minor cold? I would try sipping slower and crushing up the meds?

Wow! Sorry to hear that? I hope that your MD is being supportive. I am 1 1/2 weeks out from surgery and feel essentially fine. I need to drink slowly, especially Water. I have no pain. My MD gave me liquid vicodan when I cam home. Didn't really need it, but used it all up because it felt great and sleep was awesome. You might want to try that? Good luck.

I had the worst mucus! Coughing right after surgery was so painful but I had to expell it. Lots of clutching a pillow to my side while I coughed. The incentive spirometer is also important to help clear your lungs, frequent walking helps too. Keep your Dr. informed if it becomes chronic.

The only things I'm able to tolerate are broth, popsicles, Water & Vitamin water zero. I've tried moving up to applesauce & pudding but I have so much phlegm in my throat it's hard. My surgeon put me on Reglan today to see if it helps. Next is doing an endoscopy to look down my throat. I'm having a tough time so I can only imagine what you're going through. Hang in there...

I tried drinking Pickle Juice and it helped a lot. I read online about it. Apparently it's the vinegar in it that helps. It really did help with mucous.

I'm three weeks out too, and on purees. I get mucous when I eat too much. I just figured this out yesterday. I was having a real problem swallowing Water and my doctor had me try crystal light. For some reason that works better in the beginning he said. I hope you feel better soon.

I was 3 weeks post op last Friday. I accumulate mucous by simply eating Protein shakes and Soup. Typically I can simply expel it, but I go through a coughing spell in the afternoons. I don't know what that's all about. No complaints really, though I experienced heartburn today, for the first time since my surgery...eating absolutely nothing differently.

I am still working on getting into a groove regarding eating anything that isn't liquid based.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
