Just starting my journey

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I'm beyond thrilled that I found this forum as I'm not telling too many people about my tentative surgery (you know how many people can be so quick to judge) and I know I'll need a support system. What better support than those that have gone through the same thing? :)

I'm going to a weight loss surgery seminar tomorrow as I have yet to officially decide which surgery I'd like (although I am heavily leaning toward the sleeve). My first doctor's visit is scheduled for next week and I'm more than excited to get this ball rolling. Yet so nervous I could puke at the very same time (I'm guessing that's normal?). :(

You guys have been extremely informative as I've been lurking on this forum for about a week now. However, I do have a question I'd like to post for the post-op patients: If you knew then what you know now, what would you do differently?

Thanks to all in advance for your insight.

Jess

NOTHING! I can't praise the VSG enough! It has changed my life and I recommend the VSG to anyone that is considering bariatric surgery. I chose to have the "single" incision VSG through my belly button. It wasn't to have less incisions and worried about scars and vanity, it was to hopefully have less pain from the surgery. I had ZERO pain after surgery! A lot of people have stated that they have gas, pains, can't sleep on one of their sides, and just uncomfortable pain from the surgery but with the single incision there is NO pain at all! I'm sure some people might have some pain even with the single incision but I had none. It's a bit more expensive but well worth it at least for me!

Thanks for that input. I'm not sure if single incision is an option offered by my doctor but I will definitely look into it.

Welcome Jess! You will get tons of support on this site! I check in daily. Between all the posts, YouTube videos and Dr Alvarez' book on the Gastric Sleeve, I was able to make an informed decision to have the Sleeve. Good luck!

I wouldn't have spent five months fighting insurance and paid myself. Five months of fighting and I still ended up paying. Best money I have EVER spent.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
