Eating to fast?

Recommended Posts

I am on morning 5 after surgery. I have had my roughest evening last night, it started late afternoon with large amounts of painfull gas and diarrhea. As the evening progressed I started feeling pain in my left shoulder and the left side of my abdomen, the pain was bad enough to make me come real close to passing out, my vision started to narrow and my hearing declined. I laid back in the recliner for a while feeling like I had nails driven through my shoulder whenever I moved in the slightest. I stayed like that for about 45 minutes, my wife got me 2 Hydrocordones which helped for awhile. This being Sunday evening I thought it would be useless to try to contact my surgeon but I gave it a shot. I called his office and he had an emergency contact person that relayed the info to the surgeon (my good fortune that it was my surgeons weekend to be on call) about 15 minutes the surgeon called me, I tried to explain the best I could what was going on, he suggested that I go to the emergency room (which for his hospital is 1hr away) he said that I would probably need another upper GI and possibley a CAT scan, I really didn't feel like moving or riding to the E.R. also my wife has been off with me for the last 5 days and she allready had set up commitments for Monday, she has been my rock through this all, and did not want to complicate her schedule any more (allthough she would have at the nod of my head). The Surgeon said he would leave a message to his nurse to call me this morning and we would go from there.

This has been my first real struggle to make me question my decision to get the surgery, yes I have been whinning about only eating 2oz liquid meals but this episode made me somewhat fear for my future. What did I do wrong? I use my little spoon and take small bites of cottage cheese and yogurt, broth and pudding. Did I do wrong in snacking on colby cheese sticks(only .975 oz) that I liquify in my mouth before swallowing? I believe that some of the problem we have with excess gas also may come from suddenly changing our diets to eating more artificial sweeteners, this I know from pasted experience gives me terrible gas and diarrhea. I know that sugar to many is the DEVIL however with all of the chemistry in artificials I am not so sure that the few extra calories are worth it.

Wish me luck on getting back on my noble sleeve quest!!

I can only tell you, in my case, I was not supposed to eat anything other than Clear liquids for the 1st week. My staple line had barely begun to heal and any serious food like cheese would cause my stomach acids to irritate the staple line.

Did your doctor's instructions for post-op clear you to eat anything other than Clear Liquids?

I certainly wish you the best. Could it have been terrible gas still left? I know that at 5 days out I was still on clear liquids. Is cottage cheese, pudding and yogurt aloud now for you? Even if it is, you may want to stick with clear/full liquids for a while longer. I know for myself I did not progress to the next stage until I felt my body was ready and sometimes it was a couple more days. I know it can be tough but this is the hardest part the different stages. Grab a hold and stick to the plan, it will help you to be a success.

On a side note: I have reached my goal and without even trying I lost 1.2 pounds this week! This is how great the sleeve is!!

The packet we were given at the nutrictional semenar listed soft cheese as a snack for weeks 1 to 4, maybe I misunderstood this to mean after the first week.

could be terrible gas.. my shoulder too hurt really bad.. didnt know what it was.. did some more reading..and yup gas will cause it.. I also found out that using milk with my Protein Powder caused the diarrhea.. my doc said to use Water instead of milk.. I had phases of weeks of foods to eat..and each week something new was added but the first week was liquids.. then to soft mushy... and eat slowly..and sip sip sip... walking is a must.. it helps with the pain and the gas.. it does get better trust me there.. and oh the rewards.. you will find your tastes have changed also.. a whole new way of thinking about food.. great things ahead for you.. take it easy.. the first couple of weeks are the roughest.. remember your stomach is making some huge adjustments... its like withdrawls lol.. poor tummy... but hang in there.. and best of luck to you.. if it gets worse.. always always call your doctor.. thats what they are there for.. my group is awesome.. I even got to speak at my docs forum on the surgery..was awesome.

How are you doing today? Has the pain gone away or are you still hurting? Becareful with dairy because you just might be lactose intollerant now, it happens to alot of us after we got sleeved. Also watch for signs of leak, your stomache is like a newborns and you have to be very careful what you put in it. I hope everything gets better for you and remember take it slow and walk walk walk if you think its gas pain. Oh one more thing Welcome and Congratulations on making it to the sleeve side :-)

Take it easy on the dairy. Try to stay on the liquids and give your sleeve time to heal. You do not want to develop a leak. I agree keep in touch with your surgeon. And especially your nutritionist. Walking is the absolute best way of getting the gas to move. It may not feel good to walk but it does get easier. Please put yourself first. If your surgeon needs you to do something, listen to him/her. They want you to succeed too.

What is involved if you do develop a leak?

Did you eat anything with sugar alcohols? Not splenda or ace-K but something like maltitol, sorbitol, or erithritol? Our sleeves can be very sensitive to those. Also, lactose intolerance is very commons, as others have mentioned. I would stay away from the cheese so early out. I think I was at 3 weeks before I tried a cheese stick--I did a really soft Laughing Cow cheese first.

Im not exactly sure, what I do know about it is it takes a long time to recover and most likely you will have to have more surgeries. Some people have a stint put in and some like ( Iggychic) have a claw on hers. You can always search the forum for complications or leak and find out some really great information on it.

Colby def isnt a soft cheese. Ricotta and cottage cheeses are.

I hope you are feeling better.

I think just to be safe go back to Clear liquids or at least just liquids for awhile and then hold off on any dairy just in case your system isn't ready for it. A lot of people are different as to when they can tolerate different things. I was clear liquids for 1 week, liquids or 2 weeks, puréed for 3 etc.

Keep us posted and good Luck!

They blow our stomach up with gas so they can perform the surgery. A lot of that is the gas working its way out. I couldn't imagine eating cheese the first week though. No thank you.

Hey I'm 10 days out and I made the mistake of over eating already. I ate a whole Greek yogurt. Then I was going over my paperwork again and found out that I was only suppose to be eating like 4 table soon at one setting. I say that to say if u are allowed a cheese it may not be a whole cheese stick maybe just 2 oz. I agree with everyone else go back to just the liquids and maybe yogurt, apple sauce, cottage cheese light foods. This is the most important stage letting ur sleeve heal! Good luck . .

I am 3 days post op and as much as I would love to have something other than Liquid Protein, I think any dairy on the new stomach this early is a recipe for disaster. Hope your feeling better. Those gas pains

in the chest and back are killer. Hang in there. I know we all made the right choice In having the sleeve.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
