Grape-nuts

Recommended Posts

So, was wandering through the store looking for new foods to try, and in the wasteland of cereals, found a box of Grape-Nuts, which are an old favorite of mine. I don't think I've had them in two years, long before I started preparing for the surgery.

Anyone have any experience of being able to tolerate them OK?

Their Protein count of 8g of protein for a half-cup (without milk, so figure another 5-8 when you add that in) seems pretty good to me. Along with 7g of Fiber. Sadly, 44g of carbs, but only 5 of that from sugar. Only 1g of fat.

Thoughts on it as a choice?

Most people think this is weird, but I cook them. 1/2 cup of grape nuts and 1/2 cup skim milk. Sometimes I throw an egg in with it. Then sprinkle a little brown sugar on top. Yum. I haven't been sleeved yet but it seems this might make it easier to digest?

I think they are fine, but I am not a hardcore low-carber either. I try to keep that number down but frankly, sometimes you NEED them.

I maybe wouldn't have them every single day but once in a while is fine.

I prefer fiber one. There are better ways to get proten but there are not too many sources of fiber better than fiber one. If I eat 1/2 cup a day I notice a big difference in regularity and it's quite filling compared to more sugary cereals.

Had some Grape Nuts this AM for the first time, and they were awesome. With a 1/3 cup of milk, they went down easy and gave me 11g of Protein. Yeah, a lot of carbs, but once in a while isn't going to kill me.

Will try Fiber One as well...thanks!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
