Hi all -

I'm having surgery in TJ with Dr. Aceves on April 1st and traveling alone. To those who travelled alone -

How was your experience?

Were you miserable and wishing constantly that you had support?

I also went alone to Dr. Aceves and I was just fine. A friend was going to go with me but at the last minute was unable to due to work obligations. Once I got there I was glad she hadn't come because I wouldn't have wanted to worry about her (was she bored? was she having fun? was she comfortable at night? was she warm? was she cold? did she have enough to do to keep busy? was she getting enough to eat/drink? etc.) and I was able to focus on myself and doing what I needed to do to heal and be comfortable.

You will get to know your fellow sleevers during the pre-op stuff you have to do and once you all go to the hotel you may find yourself dining with them like I did. You will check in on them and they will check in on you - so you will have that support. Plus, I found that I got extra visits from both Aceves and Campos since I was alone.

If I needed anything (lights on/off, door open/closed, etc.) the nurse was there within seconds.

You'll do great!

You should be fine. The staff at the hospital are so attentive, your every need is taken care of. And like the other poster said, you will enjoy walking the halls with your fellow sleeve sisters and brothers. I know I formed a friendship with several who were there at the same time as I was, and we still communicate with each other four years later.

I also went alone in Houston. I packed my bags and took the bus to the hospital and walked the 2 blocks, stopping 2 or 3 times to rest. My surgery was at 9am but I wanted to get there early so I took the bus at 5:15am and got their about 6:00am and they were able to start things right away. The nurses and staff at Park Plaza Hospital were great and I couldn't have asked for better care. Two days later I called a friend and had them come pick me up and take me home. I was glad that no one was with me and I could just concentrate on healing. I had told my mom I was having the surgery but didn't tell her the date and only told her after I had done it.

Thank you all for responding. I would definitely be concerned that my boyfriend was bored, etc... It is probably best that he stays behind!

I am 1 week post-op. I was sleeved by dr. Guillermo Alvarez in Mexico and I went alone. It was awesome and perfectly fine. Not a problem at all.

I will be traveling alone. I am scheduled with Dr. Garcia on May 10; anyone else scheduled on the same day? I met a lady online that will be there during my stay, but would love to meet others. Dr. Garcia only performs 4 surgeries a day; looking for three others :-)

I actually felt pretty good once I got to hotel. There were others staying there too so we checked on each other & you just called 0 to get broth, Water or popcicle. They send you to hotel with a goodie bag of drinks & meds. It's not like you cant get up, walk around the hotel or call Dr. Luna the f/u dr. I even went on a long walk w/ another sleever there alone outside the hospital up towards the Caliente casino. I live alone at home in Fl & have had no help...except the bf vaccumed my floor since I was told not to. I wasn't in any pain, just back pain from laying in the bed... my heating pad was a life saver! I used it the entire time in the hospital and in the hotel room... so much that it died and I had to buy a new 1 when I got home. Ask any questions you want! I'll be happy to ease your fears, nerves etc. I can give u a play by play & if you want to talk on the phone I'd be glad to. :) Just message me!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
