any surgical nurses/techs/physicians?

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd start us out on this medical professionals group. I am a third year medical student and am resuming my clinical rotations a week from tomorrow. I am concerned come surgery as there are hours and hours in the OR without a break (meaning no Water or food!). Anyone have experience with this? I can kind of chug Water, but not enough to get in my 64 ounces if I'm also not eating thirty minutes after meals and am in surgery for 10 hours a day or so.

Anyone deal with this or a similar situation?

Yes, I am an OR nurse and I know exactly what you are concerned about! I actually keep little single servings of Peanut Butter in my pocket with a spoon and use it when I start to feel hungry. I keep a water bottle with me where ever I go. Our recovery room also has an ice machine so I stop and get ice Water in between cases. I recommend keeping a bottle of water in your lab coat. Maybe the peanut butter too. They come in handy in a pinch. Good luck to you!
