No Chalk: Smooth Protein Drinks

Recommended Posts

There ARE tasty Protein Drinks out there without a chalky feel. I've only found two so far, though, and they aren't ideal options. One is Protein only and unsubstantial (Bariwise fruit drink mixes), and the other has twice as many carbs as protein (Naked Protein Zone chocolate Banana). EAS Soy Protein Powder, WonderSlim shake/pudding powder, and Naked Protein Zone Mango all felt like sand on my tongue. I tried making the powders various ways (water, milk, yogurt, etc.) but they still had a gritty feel. Which protein drinks or powders do you find smoothest?

I use milk to mix my Protein shakes (GNC) and this will sound odd, but the brand of milk made a complete and total difference in the taste and TEXTURE of the shake.

I was using the store brand milk from Walmart, but when I ran out and didn't want to go all of the way to Walmart that day, I picked up a jug of the local dairy's milk from the grocer down the road. It made all of the difference in the world!

I want to try this but can never find them for sale as singles. I do not want to purchase a case, not like it and waste money.

That's a hard one I know! But I've been thinking about buying stock in these because most people end up liking them! I've actually have gone to costco and they have been sold out!

My his husband even drinks them...

Maybe if you have a friend interested in them split a case?

I really dislike the Premiere shakes. Not much flavor at all except chalk!

I like the Visalus shakes. They are delicious, low in fat and carbs.

The only ones I've been able to stomach since surgery are the GNC Total Lean RTD shakes. They have 25 grams of Protein and 6 carbs. I tried a huge variety of the powders and just couldn't get past the texture and/or grittiness of them. I'd like more variety in my protein, but got tired of wasting money on powders I couldn't tolerate. Luckily, I only drink one shake a day so it's not too bad.

No friends to share with. Of my close WLS friends, one does no Protein shakes and the other uses another brand. Maybe I will get lucky and be in store one day when they are offering samples. :)

I just use the standard GNC whey in chocolate flavor. Like I said in a previous post, the brand of milk made all of the difference! I can now enjoy a smooth chocolate-y shake every day. Also, I make my shakes at night and leave them sit in the fridge until morning. I think this helps a lot to get the powder dissolved. A quick shake of my blender cup before I drink and ready to go!

I haven't yet had my sleeve, but am about to get started with the whole process. I was wondering about Protein drinks myself and started reading the forums about them. I didn't want to buy a 4 pack of Premier Protein just to toss them if I didn't like them. I know I didn't like stuff like the slim fast shakes. Well, I broke down and bought one 4 pack, and am drinking one of them now. To my surprise, it tastes just like chocolate milk. Its really good, although I can only seem to manage a sip or two at a time. Within a few minutes though, I want another sip!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
