3 days post op...is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I have read everything on here for months and now I guess it's my turn to flip out...lol..anyways, I am now home after 3 days in the hospital...I had an extra night stay due to severe vomiting with my first attempts at liquid intakes. Now here is my dilemma, I feel like its gonna be impossible to get all the calories and liquids In are these people nuts??? I have been moved up to full liquids but even that feels like its not possible?? Totally stressed out..I am lucky to get in 100 calories all day with all the Water I try to get in.. :( any suggestions???? Thanks.

They don't expect you to get it all in the first couple of days, so just keep "building" up to the required amount. And most importantly sip Water all day. It will kind of be like your full time job for the time being but you do not want to get dehydrated.. :)

A good approach to hitting some good Protein counts after surgery is to drink 1-2 ounces an hour while you are awake. You can do this with a shot glass or just measure it as you drink from a blender cup. Alternating between sweet ( protein shake) and savory ( protein soup) is also a good way to not get burned out on drinking the same shake all the time in liquids phase. I know it is hard at the beginning. It was for me too, especially during the first week when it was painful to even swallow. Try this approach to eating on the hour and it will really help you out when you need to eat every 2-3 hours during solids. Hope it gets better for you.

Hey Pammie, when I had my postop followup appointment my surgeon's main concern was not getting in all the Protein, or even an exact number on the Fluid, just as long as it was a good amount and I was not dehydrated. His main concern was not stressing the new stomach so keep in mind this is not an exact science, we all have differences in what we can take in, but do what is comfortable and getting the liquids right now is vital. Sorry you had that trouble but try to ease up because your new stomach is your main concern. Good luck.

Hey Pammie, I totally know what you mean! The first couple of days I was sure there was no way I could do it But I have discovered that warm liquids go down easier than cold. So by drinking warm tea broth etc. it definitely helps. I am also drinking decaff no sugar iced tea (well lukewarm not iced) Yesterday I managed to get down 48 oz of liquids plus 1 - 11 oz Protein Drink. So almost 60 oz. which I guess is ok for day 2. I just feel like all i'm doing is drinking. I keep hearing every day gets easier so I'm really hoping!!!

My surgeon said concentrate on fluids first and then Protein for the first week--48 oz of Fluid minimum. It will get easier and easier...hang in there!

On Wednesday I'll be three weeks out and it's still hard for me. I try really hard but I can't drink all of my Protein Shake. I can eat soft foods but most make me want to vomit. I called my nurse yesterday and she said this is normal with the sleeve.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
